My 7M Blew A Head Gasket! :)

My Supra blew a head gasket a few months ago, right when I got a new job. I was working 80 hrs a week and so I didn't have any time to work on it. Plus I was afraid to take off the head since I've never gone that deep into the engine before. I had only taken off the valve covers to change the valve cover gaskets.

I took the head off last weekend and it was actually very easy. Only took 3 hours. My friend was helping me though so I didn't mess anything up....I hope....lol. That's the only reason why I didn't wanna take off the head. I plan on doing a big build. I considered the 2jz but I think I wanna stick with the 7M. I haven't put much thought into it yet though. I'm taking the head to get ported and polished soon. I'll be getting new cams, valves and valve springs.

Anyways if anyone has tips or anything like that go ahead and let me know. Quite frankly working on my car is just a hobby and I don't know a whole lot about cars so any advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. My best friends are helping me get it all built up and stuff. I'm looking for about 750hp. I'd love to get the car to showroom quality so I could get it into a magazine. I never see MKIII Supra's in magazines so that's sort of a goal of mine.

I will not make a comment about the 750 or the magazine, but as for you BHG make sure your deck and head are as straight and smooth as possible, if you are going to go with a MHG. Also with the head off this is the best time to do any upgrades to it, if you want.

Plan on a few thousand bucks if you want the rebuild, P&P,cams, valves, springs, & retainers not to mention the labor on the head. Also get your self a a set of ARP head studs when you put it all back together

yea that's why I planned on doing all that work, cos I realised that with the head off I can actually do quite a bit. I plan on taking the head and the block to a shop to make sure they weren't warped or anything like that. I doubt it though. The head gasket blew while it was idling and the temp gauge didn't read over half hot. I know it sounds like a lot of work and I probably won't get it all done but it's something I've wanted for a long time.

LOL, sh@% my head off my supra had NO BHG and was rebuilt 5k miles before I got a hold of it to do my entire rebuild and it was off by 7 thou. from corner to corner.

I know it sounds like a lot of work and I probably won't get it all done but it's something I've wanted for a long time.

And it dosent sound like a lot of work to me. I have done it a couple times and this time I did everything right the first time (i hope)

they are good but should be one of the FINAL things to "upgrade"

Turbo, fueling, exhaust should be touched first.

I planned on working on the head for now, then the block, pistons and all that then when the head and block are re-attached then start work on turbo, fuel management, and exhaust.

dont worry about the cams, duane made 660hp on a stock head... just get the valves, retainers, and springs to make sure thats all good.

i would worry most about your oil system, and your fuel/tuning system.

^^^ i second that
for your goals, plan on spending around $5-6 K for all the machining and new parts..... if you plan on doing the bottom end and do most of the reassembling yourself. might be more if your planning on a professional P&P.

just remember to take you time and work slowly so things are done right. dont cut corners and be sure to replace those small but vital components while you have to motor out (oil squirters, fittings, orings, etc). and most of all, do all your research before you start... it will save you time and headaches.

Most of the "A 7M doesn't needs aftermarket cams" bullshit goes back to the old days when there was nothing readily available or affordable.

ANY engine can be optimised with a good Cam set.

true, but i think its a lot easier to get a 7m up and running on stock cams, and THEN once its built and what not to just swap the cams, it doesnt take very long to get the valve covers off or get the timing cover off...

Might have been a touch harsh but not every 7M build is on a "tree fitty" budget

Cams are an integral part and it bugs me seeing it posted that they're "not needed"......

Given enough $$$, quality parts, and attention to detail it is attainable.

Go cheap and take shortcuts and the result is not so good.

Why on earth are you giving someone advice on a 750hp build dude?

Seriously ....

You had to ask advice on guides and seals.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you post as if it's an absolute.

"Stock Cams" are a 10 years ago thing when there were NO alternatives or the very few options were damn expensive.

Today there's no reason whatsoever not to install a good set of cams and reap the benefits.

How many of the 7M big dogs are still doing it on stock cams?

For those who don't know. The 7M Cams NA or Turbo are a Joke.

Like the 1JZ you will see massive gains with aftermarket camshafts.
