So, I found out that a relative of one of my co-workers is getting an MR-S for her 16th birthday... In Wyoming, where it snows... a lot. I'm trying to get him to get me in touch with her parents to voice my concern that their daughter likely won't see 17 if they let her have this car. Hell, even I'd have my hands full with an MR-S in the snow, with their lack of LSD and the engine sitting behind you, and I'm by no means a bad driver.

Would be a fun car to own, but does anyone else see this becoming an obituary within a year? Short of the girl being a driving prodigy, I do.

It's Not Important Bro
A relative of a co-worker? It's good to look after your family members and peers but aren't you a little detached from the situation to really have an impact. Your concerns are valid but you might find some inspiration from reading the "Serenity Prayer". Or maybe you can find those parents and actually have an impact but I doubt it.

Limited slip is an option on those cars. Honestly, in a harsh winter, I wouldn't be driving a 2WD vehicle if I could avoid it...

Supposedly women are safer drivers, but I remember a bunch of mustangs being totalled in high school by chicks... Typical airheaded teenage chick + friends in car + cell phone + music + sports car = recipe for disaster...

Dreamer Theresa had (or has, what's the update?) an MR2 Spyder, not sure what the weather's like over there, but she might have some insight..

But then again DT is smart and uses logic, so results may vary..

Don't forget she is hot too, so that makes it much better. Told SC that, and he said thanks. Suprised he didn't give me an infraction. LOL!

She IS hot. Even if you said she wasn't (even though you'd be wrong;)), he wouldn't infract you for that either. We don't issue infractions for having an opinion. LOL!

LMAO so very very wrong Dude very ;)

OT: She'll drive it once in the snow loop it into a Kerb and never drive it again so no biggie, might even get a cheap MR2 out of it if you're first on the scene with a handfulO$$$.

Mind your own business perhaps?

I don't see an issue here.

Meh... I suppose it's a moot point really. Don't like seeing people get in accidents, especially because they're too stupid to realize what they're buying. You wouldn't buy a kid a Ferarri to drive around here, and if your only concern is how cute your daughter is gonna look, buy her a VW Beetle or something...

IJ has a good point about being able to pick up a cheap one though, it's quite possible...

Most snow accidents are slow speed... especially when you're talking about a sports car. It's rare that someone has the talent to get up to a speed where it's dangerous to anything more than their body panels without traction.

Personally, I'd probably buy my kid something considerably more 'beater' like, as I'd be surprised if it survived more than a couple years... but on the other hand, *I* didn't get into an accident until I'd been driving for 5 years, so maybe I'm being silly. But if they've got the money to throw away, well, it's their money, they can do what they want with it.

I'm banning all of you.

I'll put it this way:
I love my car. Dearly. More than most people love their spouses.

That said, it is NOT a "good car." I had to replace the cats and have the engine rebuilt before it reached 60,000 miles. The cat/engine failure is a known issue with these cars, and Toyota has not recalled them. I doubt she can find one that will still have this covered under warranty.

I would not trade this car for anything, I love it so much, but I honestly wish I had not bought it.

I bought the car when I was 19. I taught myself how to drive a stick. The transmission and clutch were extremely forgiving with me with that.

It handles well, but is light as a feather. I often had Mike drive me to work, or my friend Ashley come pick me up for work this winter when it was super cold and super icy on the roads. The car Does. Not. Do. Ice. This car Does. Not. Do. Snow. Mid engine + rear wheel drive + barely weighs 2000 pounds = disaster.

I'm not even taking into consideration that I've been hit four times in it since I've owned it. I don't know about the drivers in Wyoming, but here, they suck hard (especially near where I work) and the MR-S is difficult to see due to its size.

Also: Wyoming? HA! This car will not handle the roads or the potholes there. It won't. It's tiny, and has a super stiff suspension. Most speed bumps are an issue. An MR-S will be eaten by your roads.

LSD is only an option in the later models. Mine does not have it.

Furthermore, she's under 24, and it's a two-seater. My insurance for the thing the first two years I owned it was $2400 per year.
