Moving From Cali to Florida...

My question and concern is about hauling my supra to Florida. What is the best truck to do so? engine transmission size etc.

The plan is to find a truck/suv with a good/big enough engine to haul it all the way to Tampa, Florida (area) from Los Angeles, CA.

Please suggestions, recommendations all is good!!!:1zhelp:

I would say ANY late model pickup or suv with a small V-8 would do a great job. I would also look into having it shipped there, it might be cheaper in the long run to have a reputable car carrier take it there for you, that way you can drive at higher speeds, and get FAR better mpg.

moving to tampa huh? good amount of mk3 guys there.....i just moved to orlando from there but its only an hour away and im tampa all the time....

good to see another mk3 coming to the group!

as for the truck...if you are renting make sure you dont actually tell them you are pulling a supra....just say a geo metro or some shit because they think the dollys etc cant hold the supra but they do just fine.

We want to buy something for the long haul. Comfortable too. Making a road trip out of it, no big rush to get out there, taking in all the sights cross country.

Good to know i will be in good company out there... :icon_bigg

So V-8 is the way to go?>... guess i asked the right place...lol

im not too keen on shipping her out there... since i wont be there to receive her... i would feel better taking her myself.

My suggestion is anything Diesel.

Towing w/ gas sucks. Find a powerstroke truck (all ford's since 95). Better towing mileage than the cummin's Dodge uses - but anything is better than a gas bigblock or v10 for towing (cost per mile and effectiveness). Especially if you are going to hit the grapevine coming out of LA.

We own a 94 dodge all window van with a 318 FI V8, we use it to haul our 18 foot travel trailer loaded with two dirt bikes to the desert up the steepest hill we encounter, the cajon pass we be passing almost everything right at 55mpg with 15mpg to boot. So basically most any small V8 is good.

From Santa Cruz to Sears Point towing a 14ft enclosed tandem w/ 2karts, associated equipment, and 2-3people, I would use ~1/4 of a tank more @65-70mph than driving the same distance with stuff thrown in the bed.

this is a '95 PS 3/4ton 4x4 extended cab w/ 5spd and 4.10's. When towing, the mileage really drops after 60mph, but I don't have all day to be driving. This trailer combo is close in weight as as flatbed w/ a car on it, but with a bigger footprint in the air (7ft standing height).

exact numbers? never bothered figuring them out. Just know it used less fuel than the other guys I knew at the track with cummins or gas.

I would rent a Tahoe or a Suburban or something if you want to be comfortable...

Someone said you can use anything diesel to tow with? How about one of these:? :biglaugh:

I would go diesel, it took a full tank for my dad's 5.3 Vortec for like 300 miles with my Supra on a car hauler, a diesel will be much better for long tow trips and a bigger tank.

That is because it is a Chevy. I pulled a 95 Dodge Dakota V8 4x4 with my 7MGE W58 equiped 87 Supra a long way. No issues.
