Moulding preservation??

:drink1: Does anyone know if there is a solution or treatment that you can put on your used or new mouldings that will prevent them from rusting which causes the warping? I was thinking possibly a coating of urathene which may keep the moisture away from the metal backing on the moulding. There must be something that can be done. I understand that buying an 89 would be a solution but that's not in the budget. Thanks for any suggestions....TT :icon_conf

:drink1: Yes tsuper92 the door mouldings are the ones I'm dealing with right now. Could it be sealed? or tape removed and put on another way? There has to be a better way. Thanks for the quick reply. Need ideas in a big way. Thanks in advance.....TT

:drink1: That sounds positive NegativeGeForce but wouldn't water still be able to get under the mouldings and eventually begin the rust process on those metal backings? That's why I'm thinking a coat of urathene possibly or some other treatment to prevent that happening over time. What do you think? All ideas welcome....TT

well any water that gets in there would just wash right through. I guess maybe some water proof grease applied on the back could help?

:drink1: Thanks NegativeGeForce that's the best suggestion I've had so far. It seems rediculous to have to pay Toyota so much money for the mouldings and know that down the road your just going to have to do it again at a higher price. I'm going to try and do these right this time around. I lost my 87 due the mouldings and a broken head gasket of course(lol). To bad the 89's don't have a matching mouldings for a maroon colour. All ideas welcome.....TT

well the mouldings are tough lil fellas. I garage my supra all the time so im not worried about rust or anything. If you always park your car outside maybe it would be a good idea to make sure there arnt any water leaks and check all around the car to see if there are any areas that hold water. I think thats the most important thing is to keep the car seals.

If you live in a cold climate and you want to keep your car lookin good...put it in storage for the winter.

supranut,a bead of urethane would seal it good.the problem with that is getting them off.i install auto glass for a living.i could prep those moldings and shoot a bead, stick them on.you would need a sharp gasket scraper to get them off.

:drink1: Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Ended up taking the moulding off and gently grinded down the inside of the moulding where any lifting was present to make everything flush and clean. Then added a rust inhibitor along and into the moulding. Then took a windshield cocking and made a bead around the entire moulding and carefully put the moulding back on. Only one clip was still usefull. The moulding went on very well and looks excellent. Hope this helps anyone who needs the this work done. Have a great day everyone......TT
