i am about to get an black '88 supra turbo 5sp with grey cloth interior. i know it will cost a lot to maintain it, but i was just wondering what the general consensus is .Is it worth the money to maintain it, pay for gas, etc.?

Also, what do you think the annual cost is to keep the car in good condish?

I currently own an old '87 camry, and it costs almost nothing to maintain it. i am just trying to brace for the change!!:aigo:

THANKS!!!!!!!

This is a great question for those of us who are not in the know.
I guess it would depend on how you drive the car, how often you drive it and many other variables.

In my case, I am having DriftMotion rebuilt and upgrade the engine/turbo and it will NOT be a daily driver but will be driven often for fun.

Also if you all can list things that need constant maintenance that would help a lot.

TIA

Best thing to save money in the long run is when you first get it do a full tune up if the previous owner hasnt already done it yet. Fluids, plugs, belts, etc...
If the vac lines and hoses are looking old it would be smart to replace those as well.

Maintenance cost is gonna be on how you treat it, are you gonna drive it hard or just commute?

Obviously driving it hards gonna cost more. As a DD/commute car it wont really cost anymore any other car with the same gas mileage of course.

it's a good car to daily drive. it just takes a bit more attention, and supras DO NOT LIKE SHITTY PARTS. buy good stuff and it'll be happy.
you can't get away with coastal oil in a supra.

If you can afford a Supra you can maintain one. When you first get it you might get boost happy so don't be surprised if your at the pump after you filled it 3 days ago.

yeah, that's wrong.
To afford a supra, regardless of the purchase price, you need to know if you can afford to fix it when it breaks.

Over half this supra community is broke. The guys that don't have running Supra's are the one spending more money then if it were. Your getting that Supra AND THATS FINAL.

If the car wasn't beaten on too bad by the previous owners and you keep up with the mechanicals it's really not an expensive car to maintain. I spent a few hundred dollars when I first got my 92 Supra on a full tune-up, replacing all the rubber coolants hoses, all the belts, etc and it's treated me pretty good ever since. Prep work like that goes a long way towards bringing the cost per year down, but you do have to front the money. It will save money in the long run, many times when something breaks it takes something else with it or requires purchase of something abnormal like a tow truck. The more mods you put on it and the harder you drive it the more things start to break or wear out prematurely, and of course it's a progressive slope. A few mods like intake exhaust and boost controller won't make a huge difference, but a large turbo will.

If you can do all the work yourself I'd say $100 annually bare minimum. Basic maintenance adds up. Tires, clutch, plugs, wires, fluids all wear out over time. The more you try to do it cheap, the worse the car will be. It's not a good car for broke college people IMO. It definitely won't be as cheap to maintain as your current vehicle, but it should be a lot more fun even stock. I probably spend 300-400 a year in maintenance (averaged out since I bought it), but I also do a lot of preemptive repairs and I'm running enough power to eat through tires every 15k miles. In the end it's well worth it for me, I can't see myself driving anything else.

Personally I would never own this car if I wasn't willing to pick up a wrench and learn how to do virtually whatever new problem springs up, but I'm cheap. You're talking a 15 - 20 year old car with manageable, but somewhat predictable problems, and parts that often don't come cheap. I work on mine at least once a month, and paying somebody wouldn't fit the budget.

That said, I am absolutely RUINED when it comes to driving other cars, because there's nothing like my Supra. I drove a brand new Camry last week on a business trip. Everybody ooohed and ahhhhed over it, and I couldn't have cared less. To me it has been worth it to put the $$ into premium gas, buy the parts I've needed, and I've really enjoyed learning more about my car than I had planned on. So IMO, it is completely worth it to own a Supra if you're in it for the entire experience.
