Well, I wasn't planning on making one of these, but after the events of today, I figure I might as well.

The background: Bought my 1987 Turbo Targa 5-speed back in May 2005. Fixed it, added intake, a front strut tower bar, and a turbo timer. Lack of funding stopped it there. Eventually, I had to sell it to my stepdad becuase I just couldn't afford 2 cars with what I was making at the time. He really didn't do a whole lot besides put gas in it for a year, so when I finally bought it back in June last year, I had to start fixing it again. I replaced the valve cover gaskets and fixed a few boost leaks, and then it ran good again. Still needs a clutch, which I have, but haven't found the time or money to install it as of yet. So today, the law of averages, or whatever you want to call it, finally caught up with me in Ft. Collins, CO (about 140 miles from home). If you hadn't guessed it, BHG happened. I was able to limp it home with the heater going full blast, so thats good, at least. Plus its really nice to know this now, as opposed to finding this out in the middle of a 1/4 mile run or something.

The goal: Nothing too insane, but with the new HG, I want to add a couple more psi to the equation, with the supporting fuel mods, of course. After that, I want to do 3" exhaust, an upgraded intercooler and piping, some stiffer struts, and better brakes. Again, nothing too crazy, but I would love a little more power without really sacrificing reliability, because this car has been excellent to this point.

That being said, I'll update when something happens!

Well, thought I would update.

Turns out I may have jumped to conclusions, lol. I've had a little free time lately, so I decided to use some of it on the Supra. Thought more about it, and realized that it probably wasn't the head gasket, so I replaced some other things.

First, replaced the thermostat, fan clutch, and the water pump while I was in there. Added all new coolant, and a bottle of Redline Water Wetter. Started it up, and it seemed to run just fine. Took it out on Higway 24, and thats where things got interesting.... When it hit boost, there was this roaring type noise coming from up front, and also a slight vibration, and then it tried to overheat again. Turned on the heater, got it back to the garage, and then started pulling spark plugs. Borrowed a compression tester, and got this:

1- 142
2- 132
3- 130
4- 130
5- 140
6- 140

So yeah, doesn't seem like a BHG to me, but according to the specs on Alldata, the motor is right on the edge of where it needs to be rebuilt/replaced. (128-142 comp. Max.= 14 psi variance). As for the roar/vibration, I'm going to go back tomorrow and see what my turbo looks like.... When I pulled everything off to do the compression test, there was a fair amount of oil in my upper IC piping, so that might be the cause of some of this. I will update when I know something more.

On another note, I cleaned up the car's appearance a bit, by painting the rusted wiper arms, and giving a coat of flat black to my anodized red/pink strut tower bar. Minor things, but I think it looks better. I'll post some pics of the car/old parts/repairs in progress a little later.
