I noticed two large threaded holes in the back of the rear bumper support... and after looking online I see that you can buy a tow hitch that bolts to them.

Did toyota put those holes there for that purpose, or were they for something else?

I come from a land down under
Mine was aftermarket, the Mk3 is a brilliant tow car, I bought one of my milling machines home with mine about 1500Kg's all up.

That's exactly what they are there for.

supra 1 - commodore 0

Bigtime, we came to an intersection and there were 5 cop cars stopped and as the lights changed I didn't want to risk running the light, I stood on the brakes looked in the mirror and saw the Commodore all locked up, I let off the brakes as he hit, I thought "FUCK I'm 800 Km's from home and the car is wrecked" got out looked at the front of his then the back of mine and had to ask "you DID hit me didn't you?"

As I said ripped a pinstripe and cracked the paint a little and that was it... I drove off shaking my head.

Cool. I was hoping they were for there for that reason.

I have a dirtbike trailer I want to tow around, maybe 600 pounds total weight with the bike on it. To tow it 3 or 4 times a year doesn't warrant buying a truck.

Yes, Hidden Hitch makes one that bolts on using those holes. You have to take off the bumper skin and cut out a section. There's a u-shaped metal strip underneath outside that gets cut as well. It's a class 1 hitch, so it'll pull 600lbs. I've had one for many years, which mostly get used to drag mulch home in the 40x48" utility trailer Northern Tool sells.

The only hitch with a drawbar that I managed to find was the Curt (same as Grim)

Curt Product # 11223

There are a few others with a flat bar from other manufacturers. IIRC Hidden hitch makes a flat bar one, also I believe U-haul has a listing for one.

I've used my car on numerous occasions to tow other sports cars when they break, the Mk3 makes a great tow car. I have every intention of using it to tow the 7 replica when I get around to building that some decade...

I had uhaul install the flat style on my MkII back in 1995 so I could pull a 4x8 trailer from cali to kentucky. A great tow car, I remember the cruise control holding pullin the trailer about 68mph for a hundred miles at a time with no problem. eh hem... i mean 45mph of course:)
