Well, I am about to buy a '89 Turbo Mk3 with Targa.. It has a fresh rebuilt motor in it, but I think the clutch is gone. Apparently the woman that bought the car bought it in Atlanta and put the motor in it and drove it here to ohio, then drove it around for a week or so and then the clutch "went out". The problem is, the pedal is all the way down to the floor and will not engage. When you go to start it up, if it is in gear it will roll as you start (tranny engaged). I am curious to know if it could be that it is just out of brake fluid in the resevoir? I have been told it could be numerous things, ie the pressure plate, pilot bearing etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that the clutch system is low on hydraulic fluid or perhaps just has air in the lines. Could also be master or slave cylinder.

probably leaking clutch master or cylinder that is now empty. Fill it up for now and bleed the clutch, then replace whatever is leaking

Did you check the fluid in the reservoir? That would be the easiest thing to check first. If it's empty, try filling it up and then bleeding the system. It may work and it may not. It's easy to try and your only out a bottle of brake fluid.
As Rumptis said, new slave cylinder and master cylinder isn't that expensive brand new. You can also rebuild the slave cylinder if you want to. Good luck.

Thanks for the help people! I have not had the chance to go look at the car again. I am trying to stick with "it needs a new clutch" to get the car for 1000. The woman wants like 1500 for it btu with it not running I am using that as leverage. The car is definitely worth like 2000+ but this woman is a very thrifty person. She tried to junk it out cause she needed the money for a downpayment on the car. Then she didnt need the money and now wants to jack up the price. I can't wait to get this car, never had a turbo car before.

All that is great Mk3fury, but I fail to see what that has to do with anything. I'm not jewish, so it doesn't offend me personally, but you may want to choose your words a little more carefully. Then again you may not care if you offend a whole religion.
I hope you get the car as low a price as possible, and I'm not trying to brow beat you. I just hate racism of any sort, form, or fashion...............lol

I don't think for one minute that you can please everyone all the time. After having said that, I'm not going to go out of my way to insult someone because of their religious beliefs. Actually, I make it a point to not insult anyone for any reason. I guess I'm just too nice. It's a curse, but I can get ugly if I have too.................If you don't believe me you can look at my picture in the thread where everyone is showing their mugs................lol

If the resevoir is empty, refilling and bleeding alone probably will not fix it. If it got empty, somthing is bad. Slave is an easy replacement. Master is easy in theory, but gets tedious because of location. It's not impossible though for a shadetree such as myself.

Right but I am hoping it will fix it enough for me to drive home and maybe to a buddies house to work on it..

Uhh, from my past experiences, if you can pick it up for $1500, and you have to (worse case scenario) put an engine in it for $1000 you would STILL come out on top when you went to sell it... of course if the body is worth a damn anyway.

If i wasn't flat broke I'd drive over to OH and pick it up today for $1500 and it only needed a clutch. I'd make rumptis change that and I'd be set.
