Hey helping a buddy install his head and ran into this.... what's the deal do they always block off half the water jacket???

That is how they are. Post a picture so we can take a look. They usually block the water jackets on one side.
The stock head gasket has both side coolant jackets open, HKS does it in a mix. The bead type has small holes on one side and the other is fully open. The HKS Stopper head gasket is open on both sides like the stock head gasket.

Make sure it's the right way up and facing the right way, can't see the Cam Oil feed hole in the Deck in that pic.

I think you are refering to a 1j or 2j head gasket, Ive never seen a 7m gasket like that.IBoughtASupra;1697920 said:

I have only used HKS & GReddy, and never seen that on either one of them before.
Are you sure they didn't send you some odd-ball 5M gasket to just get it off their shelf ?
