AHHHHH so everyone knows of the mystery noises in my motor ....well the other day I changed the oil filter and just for giggles cut open the old one.....A deep sigh filled my lungs as I realized there were sparklies embeded within the filter:cry: So I know it could be a gajillion things coming apart in there ...is there a way I can find out exactly what the metal is from? I had a friend look at it and he thinks it is either aluminum or steel .(piston? bearing?).and I'm blowin smoke for first few minutes of start up after turbie sits for a few days (valve seals?) Then of course the lovely ticking...ARGH!:1zhelp:

check out holt (aka cat) for oil analysis. if you search i did a thread on it a few months ago. they can tell you pretty much exactly what is going on in your motor. however they are more accurate when you do a few analysis over a time period to check for changes in the composition.

good luck jen!

I have been using Blackstone Laboratories since 1986. They have tested the oil on all my private cars and my professional racecars, including the last NDRA Supra.

Stop driving the car, send them a sample. They should be able to tell you what exactly is wearing in the motor. The composition of just about all the bearings in the motor are slightly different. They can usually tell you what's wearing by the breakdown of percentages of the metals in the oil.

The prices are reasonable too.

Jen - Based on your previous thread and vids, I'm 99% sure you have a bad rod bearing (rod knock). If you contine to run the car, it will get worse...you will score the crank pin to the point it will no longer be usable....if you haven't already. The motor is a grenade with the pin pulled ;)

If you want to know if it aluminum or steel particles, get a magnet and if the particles stick, it's steel. You can get an oil analysis done (like SC said, Blackstone is excellent), but really what's the point? You car has all the symptoms of rod knock and the metal particles in the filter confirm it.

Jdub has a point. The only answer at this point is to pull the motor and rebuild it. Even if you could narrow it down to a single rod bearing and you were to change that bearing, that metal is still loose in the motor. For every speck of metal you saw in that filter there's another one loose in the motor somewhere. As Jdub said, the pin has already been pulled on that grenade, it's just a matter of time before it blows up.

I've also used Blackstone for years, both on the cars and aircraft. There are other firms that'll do a filter analysis for you but as has been said what's the point? As an aside, one way to to identify non-ferrous metals is by using acid. You can do it yourself or buy a kit.

Thanks for all the advice everyone I have plans to start my rebuild as soon as I get my tax money back....I am 99.9% sure it's RK just because of everything going on with the motor ...I was just thinking it might be piston slap but it doesn't matter now anyways I guess...Better make my build thread
I don't know if I can really send in a sample to have it tested now because I just changed the oil (when I did the filter) and well it's not my daily driver but I may put a few miles on it and send it in anyways just for giggles :)
Dam SILV all these problems started after I ran my car :nono:
