I was reading that you need to deck the block and heads to do a metal head gasket.I was wondering why is this i have done head gaskets before and i only got the head checked and put it back together.I also work in a shop and every head gasket we do we just get the head checked and copper spray gasket and were done and i have never had a problem.

because metal head gaskets being metal arent as flexible adn without a smooth totally flat surface they have a higher probability of blowing 500 miles down the road.

Although not recommended you can just clean the crap out of the block surface and use copper spray a gasket like you mentioned. NOT RECOMMENDED tho..

Copper spray is not needed on new gaskets. Reusing them, yes. They come with a viton coating that seals them when new. I have a MLS HG's on an engine that had 180K + miles. It held for over a year at 24 psi until a case of deto. Alot of new cars come with MLS HG's. The surface doesn't look any different than any other surfacing I've seen.

yeah clifton, you car looks amazing:love:

milling a head is cheap, like $60, but they have to remove the cams, which costs extra, total it cost me bout 200. milling the block requires that the block be disassembled, milled and put back together. you might as well rebuild while you are there in my opinion.

ive had the honor of seeing cliftons car in person. its a very sexy z, one of the few good condition z's ive seen.

what souprat said is true, although ive also heard of some kind of tool that will lap the block with it still in the car assembled..

I jsut spoke with clearwater cylinder head and machine shop.Which is who my dealership deals with. And they told me $45 for the head and 60$ for the block and they dont have to disassemble anything there is a machine that doesnt require that you disassemble anything for the block
