Absolutely. There are probably legal issues around the odometer, but it can certainly be done.

It also stands to reason that for cars equipped with ABS, there are 3 pulse generators (4 on Mk4s) already installed in the car, one on each front wheel, and one on the driveshaft output of the transmission. These ought to be useable if one were to devise their own digital speedometer. I'm not sure what the pulse frequency is, but it ought to be pretty good in order to get the kind of reaction that ABS is supposed to have, it must be several pulses per wheel revolution at least, so there is room for a fair amount of accuracy at say, 2 samples per second.

Thought i would keep this going.

I have been looking at this and got something to work as far as placement goes. Only thing out of place is the ODO reset push button - this is about 1/2 inch out. (donor speedo is from a GX90 Mark II/Chaser).

Looks like only need 4 wires are needed for the speedo.

Will try update this in the near future or create my own thread regarding this.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have an MKIII that uses boost by speed and the speedo stopped working. I recently changed one on my MK2 in 15 min, but can one of you guys tell me if I need to buy another on that goes to the diff? Literally just bought Matt's MK3 2J and the search turned up this. Please help! Blitz Boost by speed don't work! 1987 R154 -Steve-

Te saorer use a electric speedo and dm sells the part for r154 where the speedo cable goes. Should be able to use that and just wire it up.

im not about the US, but in BC canada atleast you just have to tell your insurance company that its been changed/replaced due to being broken. they record the old ODO reading and the new reading. or find one thats close and call it a day
