Meaning of massive amounts of oil in intake manifold?

Hi all,

In my quest to replace all water hoses today the upper "surge tank" section of the intake manifold came off along with the ISC and throttle body.

Upon looking inside the still attached lower intake manifold and the upper surge tank there was a lot of dirty dried up oil on everything.

Here are some pics, I couldn't believe the condition of the cold start injector...but I found other threads where people mentioned it being pretty dirty:

I tried wiping the oil from the lower manifold, the light brown areas in ports 4 and 5 are the result.

Just wondering if this is normal to find or if this is the sign of serious problems?

Thanks in advance!

Off topic questions:
In the second picture showing all the ports there is a hose coming up between the gap between ports 4 and 5. It connected to the bottom of the throttle body. Can anyone tell me the name of this hose? It looks like a water hose, but was so easy to remove I think it might be air or vacuum.

In the third picture with the close up on the ports there is a small oil soaked black electrical connector on the upper left of the auto trans fluid dipstick. What is its purpose? I didn't disconnect anything here so I am hoping it is something in the wiring harness used only for a manual transmission.

Surge tank? In automotive that is called a plenum. Some oil is normal. You might have 20 years worth of oil from normal pcv operation.

Oil gets in via PCV, possibly a bit from a turbo as well. That still looks better than the plenum from my '90.

OT questions: that is a coolant line. It is a bypass line for coolant to go through the TB. Coolant comes from the lines that wrap around the block, enters the TB at the bottom, goes around to the ISC, and then out the ISC to the bottom to a nipple under the #2 runner in the intake.

The electrical connector is for the reverse light switch. I had thought that it would be the same for either auto or manual, haven't looked into it that closely. I know that it is in use on both of my cars, but both of my cars are manuals.

Everything he said. :)
But, If you already are getting normal use of your reverse lights, I was thinking maybe that connecter could be for the egr valve.
I saw that you're in Washington, and if your car was originally a California car, then it could be the egr.

Ah plenum, I will remember that! (Surge tank came from EPC, seemed like an odd term to me.)

Thanks to everyone for putting my fears to rest on the oil. I know the car had two BHGs that were done by Toyota, with the latest in done 2007 with the newer head gasket and correct torque. I guess they don't bother to clean things up?

Ah, that darn hose was water, thanks Dan. (My goal is actually to get the rail it connects to out of the car for cleaning.) I was confusing it with the ISC water hose since they look similar and are on separate pages in the EPC.

Hmm, will have to look into that connector. My car was originally delivered to WA, and I know my reverse lights worked. Here's hoping it is vestigial.

Thanks for the link Dan, I always forget that Cygnus has the wiring diagrams too!

Based on this info it would seem that connector is a manual only thing, but this weekend I will look again and see if something is disconnected somewhere to be sure. I did notice a NAPA sticker on the starter...I hope someone wasn't down there hacking wiring in the past...
