I have been fiddling with this damn thing for a week. I dont have a reference on the CPS so i dont know if the TDC is on compression or exhaust. Is there an easy way to find out?

put the cam gear notches aligned with the cam backing plate, and set the crank to 0 degrees. put cps in one notch CC of the top post inside the CPS. and bam

TDC for the engine is the #1 cylender at the top of the compression stroke. do what ND said or should you have the valve covers off you can look for the cam lobes of #1 to be pointing to the sky(valves closed).

oops failed to mention its an NA. I meant the distributor not the CPS. Also on the TSRM it specifically states to align the groove on the distributor housing with the protrusion on the driven gear. The only problem is that there is no protrusion on the driven gear?
