Okay so i've been farting around with the problem of MAF's not working or I just buy them and then end up returning them due to people selling broken crap. When I took my car in the Toyota Specialist said the reason why my MAF blew out (which I bought because the old got water damage due to taking it out and leaveing it outside =O) is because that it wasn't the correct one for my specific car. He said that the number on the top will tell you all. Now I have an 89 Turbo targa 5spd and the number that its supposed to have for an MAF is 22250-42020. The one I got b4 and the new one I just go today has this number 22204-42010. Now they don't match. All the Supra guys i've spoken to say Well it doesn't matter what the number is and that all MAF for MK3 turbo cars will work on all of them. Which is true but Mine worked for a year and then blew out. I also noticed that there are visual differences between my first MAF and the other one I purchased and this new I got. First off the numbers are and second the new ones are fully black also the fat stem that reads the air has a small hole on the bottom on the flat part of the stem. My original MAF is black and white and it has white dots underneath plus it does not have a lil hole on the flat part on the bottom of the stem. I am convinced that whoever says that all MAF's are interchangeable are partly incorrect due to they will blow out.

On another note I don't want to have this happen again so Does anyone in socal happen to have an extra MAF with the number 22250-42020 on it I will trade you this perfectly working 22204-42010 MAF.

Thanks.

P.S. I also called Toyota themselves and they even said it is imperative that you match your Supra with specific MAF that it needs. So the numbers have to be your for your Supra specific make, model and drive train. But giveing them the VIN is the correct way which I did.

umm MKIII supra does not have MAF (Mass Air Flow). It has AFM (Air Flow Meter). Notice the lack of the word mass in there? BTW of course the tech will tell you that.

Math on the other hand will tell you some intresting things and specifically why the Lexus AFM + 550cc/min injector swap WORKS.

Increase in internal area by roughly 25% which will make the AFM read LESS by about that much, to compensate, increase the fuel injector size to 550 which is about 25% bigger than the 440 and you are back where you started from a lambda perspective.

Or in other words, Toyota is correct when stick with stock. When modifying, we are.

Leaving thread open for the time being.

Sounds good Figgie I call it MAF because in the book its called a "Mass Air Flow Sensor" but anywho. yeah I am not planning to go with this dumb sensor but for right now I need it, because I miss driveing it. Later on i will get the MAFT PRO set up. For now its stock afm.

hmm interesting I never knew it made a difference. I have an 89 supra and the maf I just bought is from an 88. Keep in mind I am doing a 7mgte swap too.

Hmm I have a hunch that 87-89 will work and 90-92 will work. I am not sure though I don't know the year of the new sensors I got. It just depends on the numbers.

Weird, the numbers on the Lexus AFM sensor and my 87 Turbo AFM sensor is the same part number. Only difference is the housing, Lexus is much larger. I am using the Lexus AFM Sensor with no problems, since it was a lot cleaner than my old one. Looking at my other sensors from other years they do have the same part number.

So what book are you reading...the TSRM calls it an AFM (as Figgie stated):

The sensors are in fact the same, it's the housing that is different...especially in the amount of air that is allowed to bypass.

Look at the top of this Toyota TSRM. Note it says 'Air Flow Meter'
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=FI&P=96
Look at this Toyota electronic part catalog. Note it says 'Intake Air Flow Meter Assy.'
http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/EPC/291420/Parts/22250.aspx

It's AFM not MAF.

Next, I seem to remember issues of some pre '89 using the Lexus sensor or post '89 sensor, not the Lex. housing.
In this event you just swap your pre '89 sensor into the Lexus housing and all works fine.

edit: jdub beat me to it.

Oh when you go to like kragen and autozone thats what they call it and other Supra guys around town call it that. So I dunno thats beside the main issue here.
