Hey all I just converted my 89 cressida to 5speed.

I used a w58 out of a supra.

Anyways in like first, second, and third when you accelerate theres like this winding sound sort of like the sound a supercharger makes. It's not like loud or anything but it is noticable. It's loudest in first gear and fades off in second and then pretty faint in third. Any ideas?

Also in neutral with the clutch pressed it sounds different when you rev the engine compared to reving the engine without pressing the clutch in neutral. Is this normal? Not really worried about this one as the difference is really small. Almost sounds as if it has a little bit of a chatter but I'm not sure.

And gone in 4th right? That is direct, and you have no load on the input bearing. A chipped gear on that same input shaft would also make your noise.

Well, if you disengage the clutch, that is pressing in the pedal, you are no longer turning the input shaft of the transmission. There should be less noise, but I think somebody with sensitve ears would need to notice. See your first complaint.

Then there is the clutch release bearing, which will change noise when you disengage the clutch.

my r154 did this a few months back, it started faint then after about 1000 miles it got worse and worse. This was after a 5 year rebuild, with the tranny not covered up well enough...Reverse was loudest but was audible in all gears except 4th. I had it rebuilt, when they took it apart there was very minimal wear on the internals, but the fluid was black!

Check and replace the fluid, redline mt-90 is reccommended by alot of folks here on SM, I have not used it yet, but will be when the car comes home.

I run mt90.. The throw out bearing is trashed. Gear noises hint towards rebuild. Swap fluid and run it. Or rebuild if money allows it.

Clutch is brand new. So is pressure plate, pilot bearing, and release bearing.

I did not replace the clutch fork I just took it out and cleaned it up and regreased it.

I drained and filled the transmission with 80w90 castrol regular gear oil.

Um in 5th it's hard to tell since the car is moving along at higher speeds theres more road noise. But I'll pay more attention and see.

The only other thing I forgot to mention was my hanger/center bearing the rubber part is seperating from the metal outside casing and it looks like the driveshaft sags a little like hanging down where the hanger bearing is. I think this is causing a bit of a jerk when I shift gears.

i just did a tranny rebuild with new bearings, syncros, and seals. i also have a noisie but mine sounds like its whining is neutral, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and after that cant really hear it. i have all new bearings + throw out and pilot bearing so i dont know what it is. it is so anoying i cant stand it.

Sounds like something in the input section of the tranny is fubar'd.

Time to rebuild or simply replace.

And this answer is straight from the manual. The best thing to do is is remove, disassemble and inspect for damage.
