Im thinking about taking an old car and doing some extensive modification to make it look like an indy race car. but a 2 seater with passenger behind the driver. Something old too so It wont have to pass smog. (im in CA)

I want to use something that can already legally be driven on the street So It'll have registerable vins and such. Just have extensive "modding" to the frame and such. Hot roders get to mod their frames and bodys and still go on the street right? So who cares if I chop a little.

So far my choice for cars are 1st gen RX-7, or a 1st gen MR2 or a Pontiac Fiero. All three are a dime a dozen and fairly small. the MR2 and Fiero both have rear engines though which is a plus.

Thats my idea.

Why not just make a tubular chassis exactly like you want, and cover it with sheetmetal or fiberglass to look like an F1 car? Get vin tags for it and have it appraised for insurrance. Voila, your own F1 racer for the street.

BTW that ariel atom is as close as you can get if you just buy a factory car.

I saw a dude with an old Ranger and he made a custom flatbed out of pressure treated lumber. Just bolted it down to the frame. He even had holes cut in it and mounted 4 red lights and 2 yellow lights plus 2 little lights on either side of the tag.
