anybody ever heard of doing this? I've got an opportunity to buy an 81 Celica Supra for $300, but it has a rodknocked motor with plenty of blown seals to compliment it. I've got a W58 lying around, and will soon have access to a perfectly good 7M-GE, so to me it's sounding like a chance to have a good running MkI that has at least a little spunk.

Since I've never even seen under the hood of one, let alone taken measurements, what am I looking at for the swap? I don't know if it was an auto or manual to begin with, so how hard would it be to source a clutch pedal assembly? will a MkIII one fit with modification? I understand I'll have to chop the wiring harness, probably even swap ECU's, so wiring may be a fun time but I'm just looking at this being another car to have when it rains and I can't ride a bike so most of the extra options doesn't matter.

That much I can handle, i think...what I'm more concerned about is how similar the W58 and W50 are as far as dimensions and mounting points. I know a custom driveshaft will almost definately be in order, unless by some twist of fate that's the same. Is the shifter position going to be the same, and what about the support brackets? What am I looking at for fabrication? As far as the engine, I'm not sure if it had the 4M-E or 5M-E and if the mounts would bolt up with the 7M. Everything else I'm sure I can handle, I've got all the ignition parts and such.

I know i shouldn't say this but money is also a big part...I don't want to ghetto-rig it, but I don't want to spend heaps of cash on just swapping two engines out.

any help is apprecitated, i know how hard it can be to find a MkI, and I don't want to pass the opportunity up if there's a way I can make it work.

this is the only one i've got of it...saw it a while back, snapped a pic through my dirty window, then a buddy of mine who owns another supra in town told me he talked with the owner and he's looking to get rid of it. Looks like it's in pretty good cosmetic shape considering the age.

Im thinkin a JZ series would do very very well in that MA46

:evil2:

well see, that's where the donor engine is coming from....my buddy is doing a 1J swap so we'll have an extra engine lying around, I've got a W58 tranny/ECU/wiring so it only seems right that we swap it all out lol.

not to mention it's going to be a DD/grocery getter/piddle around in the rain car....not a racecar, it's too old for that!

well looks like from what allan says this should go a lot eaisier than I figured it would! The main obstacle is going to be wiring it all together, but I'm sure I can figure it out.......probably.

I'll get a build thread going as soon as we get the car!
