I am trying to change out a leaky side/output seal...Finally got the cv shaft separated from the axle stub.A friend told me i should be able to pry the stub out easily..Not so much.Moves in and out about 3/8 of an inch but it sounds really solid on the outer edge.Do i need to line anything up?...pound it out with a hammer?...use slide hammer only?....just don't want to do more damage!..read somewhere here it shouldn't be this hard....

There is a small ring clip in a groove on the stub axle that locks into a groove in the side spider gear in the carrier. You need to use a slime hammer to get that ring to come out of the groove so the axle stub can slide out.

So there is no lining things up or twisting as it is pulled?...just feels really solid...have new clips ready to go too..

Sometime it helps to rotate the axle stub 1/2 turn it is very hard to remove with slide hammer. The "c" clip can be hanging down do to gravity if the open end is at the top. This small difference can make it hard to remove. IMO.

Arrrgg..gettin frustrated now!....Slide hammer i borrowed way too long...tried a 2 foot long prybar..NO GO...I can move the stub in and out 1/4" but where it stops it has a heavy metallic "clink" sound to it....not like it's hitting a clip..What am i doing wrong?Do i have to keep turning it half an inch at a time to let the clip set in?Afraid to beat too hard on the flange but either it comes out or it's drop the diff and do it on the bench....

I have had a few very stubborn stub shafts on a few I rebuilt.
Even on the bench it sometimes takes the largest slide hammer I have & some serious effort to get the clip to let go.
Sounds like you may have a tough one too.
Probably a good idea to pull it out and do it on the bench.
Don't pry against the dust shield at the base of the stub shaft.

No, I mean replace the long slide hammer center section with a much shorter piece. Then it does not get tangled in the suspension and hub. Otherwise you need to remove the differential to get enough room to use the slide hammer effectively.
