I've got an 86.5 N/A that has been transformed over the last 2 years to a 1JZ and has been running great. However, I knew from the moment I bought the car that the diff was dying at 150k miles. Had lots of slop and made clunking sounds from time to time.

Now, after driving it with the 1JZ for about 6 months, the diff is dead. Here are my questions:

1. Are the open differentials and lsd differentials interchangeable?

I have heard info from various sources that there are slight differences and then a lot of people say they are exactly the same (as far as fitting in the rear end). For example, there is a Kaaz part number for cars with open diffs and cars with lsd diffs. A Kaaz dealer told me that the one designed for open diff cars will NOT work with my lsd equipped Supra because of a minor difference with some flange on the axles or something. Unfortunately, they have the open diff unit in stock and the lsd diff unit is custom order from Japan :( He did say that if I got the open diff axles or something, I could convert over. Is that true? What exactly would I need from the junkyard?

2. What aftermarket options are available?
I have seen Cusco, Kaaz, OBX, and TRD. However, I have called every TRD dealer and major Toyota dealership I can think of that deals with Supras and they either say its discontinued or out of stock and don't have any idea how to get them in. As far as OBX, from my searches I have heard nothing but bad about them.

3. Does anyone sell a rebuild kit for rebuilding the stock clutch-type unit?
I've had an order placed with the local Toyota dealership for two weeks now and says he has parts coming from Japan for everything I need but I am losing faith in this since he can't provide any tracking information and can't even confirm they have been shipped or anything at all.

Sorry if this info has been posted before, but I promise I have done lots of searches in the last week or so!

you could always change this thread to a WTB- diff in good condition.

edit: yes the lsd and opens are interchangeable... im not sure about the internals, but you can swap the whole diff assembly (the whole pumpkin)

as long as you dont launch with sticky tires too much with a good bit of power. The stock torsens tend to not like that so much ;)
