Has anyone here ever replaced their LSD clutch plates? Is it possible for the average guy to do it? Any threads on this? (I couldn't find them).

edit: Also how does one test their LSD with an automatic trans?

THANKS!

Never replaced one but here's an easy way to test it...

Drive to a parking lot/deserted road/[insert place to avoid cops here], and just have a little fun powerbraking.

How to powerbrake if ya don't know:
put your left foot on the brake and right on the gas, hold the brake down hard at first then press the gas enough to hit ~2.5k RPM, just release the brake enough to get the back to break loose and creep forward while spinning your tires.

Be careful not to waste to much tire, and I know it sounds primitive, but if you leave two even marks on the ground your LSD is OK. And it is an easy way to be sure your LSD works.

So it is confirmed bad?

Actually I changed the differential oil today with ford hypoid lsd oil 90wt and it seems to be pretty good. No noise (it never did make noise) and I did a little burnout on my driveway and both wheels left rubber on the ground. So I guess it's all good.

Still I am curious about the life expectancy of lsd clutches and what it takes to replace them.

if you want to check the diff if it is LSD or not simply look at your VIN tag under Trans/axle. you will see some codes and do a search on the code meanings ( i forgot what is what for lsd,2 and 4pinion.the links are on my home pc but im in papua new guinea atm).

I'm pretty sure yours is OK then.

Some drifters rebuild once or twice per month, but it all depends on use, if you haven't used it much, the service life of a well maintained LSD can be pretty long.
