lower rear timing cover

I accidentally bolted the head to the block not realizing that the lower rear timing cover had to be on there first. I tried to put the lower rear cover on and tapped it with a rubber mallet and slightly bent the MLS gasket. Question is can I safely unbolt the head without loosing the coating on the head gasket and put the timing cover in or have I made a big mistake? Also some of the mechanics I work with suggested I just cut off the gasket that hangs off the end of the block and use silicone to seal the passage that passes between the block and timing cover. I seem to this this is unsafe because it seems that the timing cover supports the head in the front. If this is not the case would this be an option as well? Or am I over thinking this whole thing and the cover is supposed to just slide on and the machine shop didn't mill it as much as the block was?

If you didn't have the front cover machined with the block then your screwed. It should have been bolted on when the block was decked

when I took the block to the machine shop I had the cover bolted to the block and told the guy who was actually doing the work that it had to be bolted when it was milled because the head rests on it as well. The cover has obvious marks that it was milled but when I picked up the block it was not bolted together, but this could be because he installed new oil pump drive bushings.

If your lucky the coating will stay on. But I doubt it will.

And being that the gasket it bent. I would I just get a new one.

Without the engine ever going through a heat cycle wouldn't the coating still be intact? Or does the pressure of it torqued down make it stick to the mating surfaces?

It's not bent in the sense of it folded over just the bottom most layer is kinda twerked in the corner. I'm confidant that if the gasket is put down flat on the mating surface it would straighten out the bend without issue. And why couldn't I just use Cooper spray gasket? Plus I thought the sealant only sealed after the motor heats up.

This is what I was thinking. When you pull the head off, and Viton lifts clean it all up then give it a couple of coats of copper spray. Reinstall it. MLS gaskets can be reused. You have one that has never been ran. I don't see a problem reinstalling it. That's just my cheap ass though.

Oh, don't you have to pop the rivets and clean/respray each layer guys?

Viton and copper spray together is not the best combination.

If your going to reuse the gasket supposed to take the layers apart and clean all the Viton off and then spray copper spray on all layers and reassemble.

Personally if rather just buy a new gasket as the Viton will work better.

I used to reuse mine 4>5 times each before replacing, at $400 a pop for HKS Stoppers you'd be an idiot not to...

you should put that statement in context... a MHG is supposed to be the "do it once - do it right" solution... why would you reuse it 4-5 times? :)

Just a guess:
300 rwhp... not enough
400 rwhp... not enough
500 rwhp... almost
600 rwhp... ahh, got my money's worth outta that gasket!
