I want to see what turbos people have upgraded from and their thoughts on it.

particularly for the 7mgte platform...

Who has went from the stock ct26--> upgraded ct26--> t4 style turbo?

what are your thoughts...do you look back at it as a waste for the upgraded ct and wish you just went for the t4 base or did you prefer the upgraded ct instead.

I have run all three between my 2 cars and personally love the drivablity of the upgraded ct. Absolute blast in town, although I am going to a T4 real soon for me HP it is going to all be based around low end power to make it fun to drive!

I've gone from stock, to an upgraded CT, to a full on bolt on Turbonetics. The upgraded CT was fun, but it didn't last. It was a bit hard to drive too, boost hits hard and fast - not such a good thing when you're cornering.

The Turbonetics bolt on is very nice - slower to spool, which makes it much more driveable, and lots more pull up high in the RPM band.

If I were doing it again, I'd skip the upgraded CT stage.

GrimJack, do you know where I can find any information on these Turbonetics bolt-ons? I have the 62-1 (which I haven't ran yet) and I'm curious what I can expect to push with this with supporting mods. Also wondering when I will start to see full boost.

You could ask me, I have the same one. Or pretty close, anyway. Specs claim near 500 for power, I get positive boost starting at 1500rpm and full boost shortly after 3500. Pulls wicked hard right up until it bounces off the rev limiter, too - or until I take my foot off, because it's hard to steer with both rear tires smoking. I'm not even running it hard yet, still have the boost controller set to 12-13psi.

I believe it's a waste to stick around with CT upgrades.
I don't believe it's MUCH of a waste sticking with the CT footprint turbos, if you have the $$.

T4 footprint turbos are quite versatile, and abundant in the aftermarket.
If you want to make lots of power and run high boost pressures, you're going to want to investigating external wastegates.
(A setback with bolt-ons.)

Agreed. The *only* reason I bought this one was because I wanted something I could bolt on to get back on the road fast, as this is my daily driver.

Then it took nearly three months to get this, after I paid for 'expedited service', no less. If I'd known it was going to take that long, I'd have gone the external wastegate route instead.

Stock CT26: I had a lot of fun with this in the BPU stage, huge difference from stock exhaust to BPU

Upgraded CT26 60-1 trim, clipped 12 degrees: Noticable difference but not that much. Car was still a lot of fun to drive around town. I guess I didn't enjoy it as much because I was expecting too much out of it. I don't ever recalling breaking anywhere near 400rwhp.

SP63: What can I say, this turbo made me happy. Has lots of room for more boost and gave me a seat in the pants feeling. My signature says it all, this turbo is still kicking after all these years.

FYI, Brent is right, upgrading your CT is a waste. Why you ask? Well, when upgrading the CT, your buying either one Walbro or MKIV TT fuel pump, some 550's, lexus AFM, etc.....Why spend all that money to support an upgraded CT? It's best to buy parts with room to grow. I'm speaking from experience, so trust me on this. Hope this helps, ask anymore questions you may have.

I come from a land down under
NA> GT3040R/.63 ar> GT3540R/1.06ar> T04z/.96ar

3040 ran out of breath around the 5000 mark but pretty well made power from idle.

3540 was INSANE and hit like a sledge hammer no matter what I tried to make it civilised

T04z was a sweetheart with a good spread of usable power but lacked the top end of the 3540 due to the tighter ar I used.

It's interesting that you consider a .84 or .96 A/R/ "tight", when so many consider them to be the higher laggiers ones(for a street car). On Supraforums, I so often see Mk4 owners go with a .68 for fast spool. Is it all just a matter of personal taste? Or are you one of the few revving to 8000? :)

WOAH WOAH WOAH, I fully disagree with quick spool being bad for cornering, that's sounds like a lack of throttle modulation to me. You want to be able to spool quick to get around a corner as quick as possible you shouldn't need to wait for boost to spool.

I can tell you I run a Garrett 62-1 in a Turbonetics housing and I'm trapping somewhere between 116-121, probably around 118 at 15psi. No I don't have any dyno numbers yet, I'd rather have my car rolling for an automotive acitivity. (If you were gonna ask)

LOL - no, I don't think so.

The upgraded CT spooled from zero to 18 psi in a fraction of a second... there was no modulation, it was more like flipping a switch.

I don't care what tires you are running, nothing holds in a corner in first gear at 18psi. And drifting around every corner in sight gets old when the traffic fines start to pile up.

Just finished up a JT61GT in a MKII tonight. Still need lots of tuning, but man it's fun.

When all is said and done I expect 425rwhp+ easy.

Jeff

Jeff, That should turn more like 550 hp and up. Will you be doing a dyno on that MKII ? let me know
