Hey everyone, how are you all doing? Hope you've all enjoyed your weekend.

Well, I have some questions. So, about a month ago I bought an 86.5 Supra N/A with an 89 Turbo swapped into it. I knew it had many problems with it, such as a knock, leaks oil everywhere, timing is way off, etc.. Lots of things. My plan is to get the minor stuff fixed now, such as ball joints and what not, and then come July I leave for Basic Training and AIT. Then, once I come back from there, I'll have plenty of money to be able to drop into the engine and get it all running as best as I can.

However, today I was driving, and for some reason I decided to put off checking the oil just a little bit longer than I usually do. (Usually I check it before I start the car every time just because it leaks that much. The guy I bought it from over torqued the valve cover or whatever and now it leaks like crazy, as well as the front seal on the bottom end.) Anyway, I knew that was a bad idea but some reason went on anyway. Sure enough, I came to a stop light, and as soon as I started to go, all I could hear was the engine knocking after 2000rpms. Great. So most likely the already spun bearing, is now a lot worse and I don't think I'll probably be driving it anytime soon.

So here's my question. Being as the whole engine has problems scattered throughout, what would be a better deal? Buy a whole new 7mgte, or just get the entire engine rebuilt?

Ideally I'd like to do whatever is cheaper just so I can have the cash to fix other stuff on it, but the engine comes first. In the long run I'll do whatever is better for reliability. I can order a used 7mgte from SupraStore.com for roughly $2000, then use whatever parts I need.

Anyway, sorry for all the useless info. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Iirc last I've seen supra store isn't a good place to deal with. No first hand experience tho.

A new short block iirc is like 3-5k.

Jdm motor is like 1300 and prolly should be rebuilt anyways.

Honestly if you want to keep the 7m best bet would be to just rebuild the current engine and fix any issues while your in there.

That's just my opinion tho.

Alright thanks for the advice! I have also found I can get the 1jz engine with a 5spd tranny for about $3300. But maybe that wouldn't be the best idea being as it too is on SupraStore.com

I wasn't unhappy with my dealings with SupraStore, but it was a while ago, and I didn't really buy much. Not much to go wrong.

Fix the motor that you own. Don'y buy a different used motor which you'll have to do a full build on anyway. That's where I went, but then I only spent $250 on it, and that includes a turbo that isn't in bad shape. Still, it is going to be a full build in the end, and after re-buying some of the hardware that I have in the block that's under the hood, at best, it'll cost the same as rebuilding the block that I have. The only advantage is that I'm able to start on a motor on a stand sooner than I'd have been able to pull the motor from under the hood.

Thanks all for the advice! I think I'll just rebuild the current motor then! Unfortunately it will be a long time until that can happen.. Sucks the car will just be sitting now until December when I get back :/

so I started it again today just to check for any other odd sounds, and the knocking completely vanished. I thought it was weird that it wasn't there on start up, so I took it for a small drive. Nothing. I did some pretty hard pulls just to make sure. Still, absolutely nothing. Any reason it would do this?

just as everybody else has stated full rebuild on the engine you already have would be the cheapest

most jdm engines i seen installed are rebuilt or replaced within a yr or 2

spend 1300 on a used 7mgte now...if your lucky drive for a yr or 2 then rebuild it later
or just rebuild the 1 you got now and save the 1300!!!
