Guys,

I'm just gonna throw this one out there. I know that everyone has their own ideas and doesn't usually like thinking of limits on how much power is too much, but I was wondering, for a true daily driver what would be the limit for power for a 7M MKIII?

Just wondering - lotsa people shoot for some pretty impressive #s, and don't necessarily talk about the compromises that they have had to make to get to those #s.

If a car is intended to by used daily, no track time, what do you guys feel is an appropriate limit for WHP for a daily driver?
Or at what levels what are the compromises that have to be made? ie. smooth idle, stiff clutch, lag, higher power band, warm-up times. It will be interesting to hear about what kind of compromises need to be made for certain HP levels.

Looking for your guys thoughts. I haven't found a good source on this, and am curious what everyone thinks. Should provoke some discussion about varying opinions.

This is why turbo cars are so much fun, they can be absolute monsters when needed, but sedate and civilized around town.

I know of one 1000+HP MKIV that's daily driven, and several 500-600HP MKIV's that are as well. It's really not that had as you have a 3 liter motors so having lag really isn't that bad as even out of boost you're as fast as most hondas.

Boost controller is key here, that's why you have a low and high boost setting...

I feel 450-475 crank hp would be as easily driven daily as 232 crank hp from the factory.

Anything more and cluch drivability, idling and larger lag come into play...Just my opinion for a daily driven supra.

I made my post because most people don't do proper maintenance on their car. Then they modify it and when shit goes wrong, they either complain about 7M reliability or they just garage it/store it for months and months, or of course they just sell it. Of course having more than 236 HP can be daily driven, but the thing is, that's only if the engine has already been properly.

Anyways OP, just do exhaust/downpipe/boost controller and you'll be set for a DD that's quick. Make sure you maintain your car or you'll end up like 99.9% of the people here :)

i've daily driven 2 supra my last one had mods for 300plus hp when needed, but on low boost it was good to me but i change the oil every 4k or every other month.

but my new supra ive been daily driving it with jus Ic upgrade/exhaust/dp/ and intake. ive driven it everyday for 6months and just recently my theromostat failed so thats the only problem ive had since then.

anyways as MA70 said as long as you take care of maintanace then you will be fine!

Anything under 600 RWHP is manageable on the street, that's the limit I set for MY street cars.

As for other people, it's simply a matter of whether or not the owner can afford to maintain it properly, and whether or not they can have that much power on tap without killing themselves.

Turbo cars are inherently streetable off boost provided you haven't put gigantor cams and an on/off switch clutch in them.

It's all relative.

Personally, the limit of a full face clutch with an upgraded PP is the limit for DD, so figure around a 57trim as the largest DD turbo. I hate it when I need to drive my supra in traffic, the 6puck kills me.

what about snow with that kinda power? with my stock 7mgte i have problems, granted that was because i couldn't afford to get snow tires and i was workin my way around with yokohama yk520's (got them to spin with the engine's idle a couple times) but even with snow tires how manageable would it be?

This is what they make electronic boost controllers for.

Turn down the boost.

When I rains I turn the EBC off in MKIII and drive on the wastegate.

No sense in making 20 psi in a rainstorm...

In general, all Supra's suck in the snow - it's the nature of the beast.

I don't think that I will personally go much above 425 whp on the street. This isn't to say that it can't be done reliably or safely. I just think that is all the power I need on public roads.

oh another random thought how thin of a tire could we go with using the stock rims? the biggest reason our cars suck in snow is cuz our tires are so fuckin wide.

Correct. High performance tires don't do well in the snow. If you run 275/285's in the rear like I do, they act like snowshoes. They put you on top of the snow, not on the road.

This would be a good snow tire on stock buzzsaws:

Warning: If you run snow tires, only install sets of 4. Do not run snows mixed with regular tires!
