If you were rebuilding you motor, which route would you go concerning gaskets

  1. complete set of Toyota gaskets & seals
  2. Toyota seals only & use FIPG instead of gaskets
  3. complete Felpro or equiv. gasket & seal set
  4. Felpro or equiv. seals & FIPG instead of gaskets

The last Toyota gasket set I bought set me back over 3 bills, so now I'm leaning towards buying only the seals & using FIPG instead of the gaskets. Any thoughts?

Did you buy Toyota seals? Do you remember what they cost you? Also, what brand FIPG did you use?

I come from a land down under
I picked up my gasket set yesterday and it's made by the same company that do the Toyota OEM gaskets but will be much cheaper! (haven't seen the invoice yet)

It's a made in Japan set and uses Viton seals instead of plain rubber.

Is that a full gasket set or just the head set? Who did you buy from?

My gasket set was from a company called ITM, who supposedly makes the OE gaskets for Toyota for North America

Fit and quality on the gaskets was good and I have no known problems to report :)

Rakka: It's the full set and my machine shop got it for me so I'm not sure where they sourced it!

Dustin: That rings a bell I know it's 3 letters but I didn't look closely.
<edit> Just went and checked.

The Kit is "MDS" and the Head Gasket is embossed "Stone" this according to my machine shop guy is who makes the OEM for Toyota.

FIPG? Someone mind filling me in on what that stands for?

IJ: You think you could ask your shop guy to see where he sourced it or at least names? Btw, don't forget to tell us how much it cost ya.

Can a Metal headgasket be reused? like an HKS?

Yes, but you have to drill out the rivets, take it apart into it's various layers, and clean it very well. Then just use the dowel pins on the block to line everything up when you are installing it.

Ingy: No probs I should be over there sometime today!
(Brand is MDS with "made in japan" all over the backing cardboard)

Seals are all quality made in Japan pieces as well.

One thing I've noticed with "Full Gasket sets" here is the front cover gasket and the rear main gasket (not seal) aren't included is this just an Aussie thing?

MDS eh? Thanks man. I'll drop by the shop where my mother takes her corolla to the guy who does a damn good job at keeping it in shape. I'll give him the name and see if he can find it somewhere around here too.
