well i'm looking at replacing my exhaust system while the engine is under the knife... i want to stay legal. i was looking at using a tanabe, a magnaflow direct fit cat, and a yet to be determined downpipe.

if i'm running the 1 cat, will removing the 2nd one in the downpipe keep the legality of the system?

I'm in MD, which has gotten ridiculously strict the past few years.

i think technically it is illegal in every state to remove the precat in the downpipe.

as long as you have the main cat under the car however, i am sure that is all any inspection station will look for.

correct. on an older car it is ok to replace the cat but not remove it. however the precat is only used really until the motor warms up enough to activate the primary. unless the tech is really up on his stuff and knows there should be a pre cat you should be ok if your readings are low enough.

thanks guys! i guess i'll go with a downpipe.

i'm pretty sure i should be good. the motor is almost done, and it will have new o2 sensors, and a new cat... i'm not concerned.

I passed my visual inspection with the mods listed in my sig. My results were very good on the sniffer test, some of the best numbers they had ever seen. The parts were still pretty new however with maybe a couple hundred miles on them.

hey man, did you have fitment issues with the TMS cat? i've heard the bracket needs modifying.

Nope sure didn't. Everything bolted right up without a hitch. The hardest part was getting the old cat off. The bolts were pretty much part of the bracket!

Hey Charlie, I run a catless DP and just a 2nd cat when I do emissions and its passed everytime in flying colors. As long as your engine is healthy passing with one cat shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure about in Rockville, but here in Fred. county the emission people write in NA on my visual inspection because the car is so low to the ground. They even did that when I had my stock suspension.
