this is posted on MDsupras.com and i am listing it here for more knowledge[since there is more here ;) ] i am blowing lots and i mean LOTS of smoke and this is the options my mechanic has given me....

*sigh*...... soooo

okay i get the call from bobby, my mechanic...says that the smoking is either the head the rings or the turbo....tells me since it was rebuilt he things maybe it was a bad rebuid and thats the problem.....

calls me back two days later[this morning] and says i pulled your turbo and it looks like someone poured a quart of oil in the manifold....so its def not the turbo....its either leaking from the valve(s) or he says the rebuild could have raised compression and forced the rings to allow oil by.....which i doubt

correct me if i'm wrong but using a stock head(3angle valve grind) and a stock HG and changing nothing but the TQ on the head bolts should not and almost certainly could not change your compression far enough to bump it past holding oil.....right?!

my next question is.....shouldn't a compression test or something tell you if the rings are bad???? i've done a compression test. its not hard

i was told he still can't tell if its in the head or in the bottom end.....but if i say check the top end....it is in the area of 700, if i say check the bottom[which as far as i am counting is a dumb idea] he says about 2200 and up depending on what needs replaced.....the 2200 being the labor

sooooo.....i have a car that was strong before I changed the head[way to go ] that is most likely leaking oil from the valves[not a super hard problem] i have 2" IC piping, greddy type-S BOV, NA cams, 3" cat-back, lo-tek triple pilar, free mods, and many pre89 to post updates....climate control, stalks,....this and that little things. should i fork over the cash and hope its the top end or should i beg at gregs feet to trade him my car and cash for his extra car????

i'm personally at a loss, and need input...

Any good mechanic can determine if its the valves or rings, without a teardown. Run compression test. Then may be needed to put an OZ of oil in the cylinders (thru the spark plug hole) that may have low overall pressure. That will tell if the rings are weak.

valve seals in my experience usually shoots out whitish/blue smoke from being unburnt oil....and smoke on startup and occasionally do the deceleration smoke thing...

rings usually are blue smoke... i believe at idle its not too bad but under acceleration it will continually smoke

when does it smoke?

Sounds to me like your mechanic sucks.

A blown oil seal on the front of the turbo will fill the intake with oil.

To find out where the leak is if it is internal, do a leak down test not a compression test. Air will either exit the valves, rings, or through the head back into the radiator.

he has told me its deff not the turbo just like i told him, i didn't ask about a leak down test. i guess i could ask about the leak down test.

right now a machine shop is checking out my head[is what i'm told]

kinda disappointed with the experience on a whole riht now

Agreed. A leakdown test will pinpoint the problem if it is in the cylinder / piston area.

A turbo is a little tougher to diagnose, the easiest method I've thought of is to bolt on a turbo that you know works, and see if the smoke goes away. With the amount of oil it sounds like you have in the manifolds, it may take a while to burn off entirely, even if you replaced the turbo.

I had oil in my exhaust manifold when I had a badly blown exhaust turbo seal.....lots and lots of oil...

Changed the turbo, car smoked for about 15 minutes, then quit....

If that helps any.

Check your lower IC pipes, if you have blown turbo seals the oil likes to sit down at the bottom of the IC. Later.

it's not my turbo, i thought i said that earlier....

it was rebuilt like a month go and the car couldn't have been driven even a mile, and hasn't idled more than 20mins. the turbo was pulled because my mech keep saying its probably a bad rebuild, your gonna probably need to get a new turbo.....blah blah....

any way, i spent way too much money[385] on the head i used and there was way too much wrong with it.....i feel very certain that i will need to replace it

john

ill post more as i find it out but its been about a week and i dont even know if they have taken my head off yet....:(

hey jester... you need to give a fellow Htown supra owner a shoutout! Anyhow... how about the valve stem seals in the head? Mine are bad and it causes heavy smoke at idle but only rarely. I have to do a ton of stop and go for it to act up.

no valve stem seals are good, mechanic told me today the head is completely fine too.......and that it is clearly number 2, 4, 5, and 6

where is my best bet on new rings??

jaydm16, where you at in Htown, are you on mdsupras.com, if not come on over
