Hey guys, anybody run into a problem like this before:

I love my Toshiba Satellite notebook, but the screen is getting bugs it seems. The computer is 3 years old. Model M55-S325.

The screen will randomly start to flicker and stretch vertically, almost as if the tracking is bad on a VCR and you can only see 1/2 the vertical picture. I can stop the flickering with some tapping of the top of the screen, so it seems as though it may just be a bad connection. Once I get it back to normal, it stays there for a while and is not touchy, per-se.

Has anyone run into anything like this? I may have to try to take it apart and find the bad solder joint(hoping that is all it is) if it continues. School starts soon and this can't be going on during school.

Thanks for your time and advice,

Andy

***Edit/Update: I can control the flickering now by lightly squeezing the border of the screen on the top left. If I squeeze anywhere else along the top border, the screen begins to flicker. Pressing the top left area stops the flickering and returns the screen to normal. Just a bad solder joint? Or is there a ribbon of some sort up there? :dunno:

i'd imagine its a problem in the harness between the motherboard and LCD. i have a old-school sony vaio that does this, basically i just have to move the monitor forward and back a touch til it works. pull it apart if ya want to, if its out of warranty you have nothing to lose and it may be as simple as a loose plug.

Sounds like the ribbon's giving you troubles on the back of the LCD. If you disassemble the LCD housing, you'll see the metal brackets holding the LCD in place. Unscrew them, and GENTLY lift the LCD up, and flip it over. See if the ribbon on the back is loose. It should run between the inverter and LCD panel itself.

Check the cable to the video card for shits and giggles, and blow it all out with some compressed air ;)

Or if you want, ship it to me, and I'll take care of it all cheap for you.

Great info!!! Thanks Doward, I'll give it a try if the problem gets any worse than it is and if I can't figure it out, I'll gladly send it off to you. :)

Thanks again.

Monitor fixed with a strip of Narrow Gap Rubber Tape "Weatherstrip tape" for home use. :)

Put it between the back of the screen and the lid backing of the laptop. The long, wide ribbon seems to have come un-adhesived to the circuit board running across the backside of the top of the screen. Not sure how to go about re-gluing the circuit into place, but this definitely works for now. :)
