Lapping Compound...which grit?

Good evening everyone,

I am in the process of lapping both the head and block. I bought a 12" diameter grooved lapping plate from Lapmasters:

I know from an article I read from Reg Riemer that he used Clover lapping compound, but does anyone know which grit(s) should I get?

I appreciate any input.

I just talked to him today. The answer is "medium".

Diamond paste is muuuchhh faster...IJ recommends start with a 40, finish with a 15 on a freshly machined block deck. Make sure the block is flushed clean really well when done...you don't want either finding it's way into the moving parts

What's the clover leaf stuff made from? (Edit: I see three abrasives for 'Clover lapping compounds'. My guess is White Aluminum Oxide for the Medium grade, although I'd want to use Boron Carbide).

I've also heard a recommendation to use silicone in all the bolt holes, let it dry, and then pull the plugs out after you're done lapping. This will prevent the compound from getting into the holes.

I would recommend heavy grease in the holes. Silicone will be unpleasant to remove.

Diamond is just so much faster it more than pays for itself in time saved.
