well my friend did the knock sensor rewire for me. at first everything seemed to be working top notch. i was loving it. i was waiting around a parking lot for my friend and when he finally got there i took off and the check engine light came back on...shit! checked the code and it was code 52. i took the car back to my friend to check everything out. it turned out that the front sensor was broken! wtf? never seen that happen before. anyways, i got a new(used) one from him but the code still came up. any ideas what could be wrong?

did you clear the codes? if you dont clear the codes, then it'll still show that you have it, as they are stored in the ECU until you remove the 15A EFI fuse in the engine bay fuse box for 30+ seconds.

there is a short some where causing the knock sensor to malfunction, hence the ECU throwing the error code. you have to fix this buy rewiring the sensor so there is no short.

yeah but it shouldnt pop up again if youve fixed it, even if you havent cleared the codes. the car should run fine aswell. it will be stored however.

So all thoes codes stay stored in the computer forever? So by the time the car is old you have like a hundread stored codes in the computer? lol also is the knock wire short a common problem with MKIII, I get that code now and then

uhhhh...... the point of pulling the EFI fuse is to cut power to the ecu which causes the stored codes to be lost.

porterz, i highly recommend you do some research. :) you have alot to learn. ;)

use the link in my sig for checking codes, that should explain some to you.

and lagged, you're right. :) he didnt say he cleared the codes after he replaced the sensor, which is why i said that. perhaps i misunderstood him?

the purpose of re-wiring the KS's is to use sheilded cable to prevent any "electrical noise" from disrupting the KS signal to the ECU. when the signal is disrupted OR if there's a short, OR if one of the KS's is bad, the code will trip.

when code 52 is tripped, the ECU enriches fuel mixture, and retards the timing. (ie, your car will run like crap)

I am the one who did the rewire for eighty-7t. I have done several of these with no problems at all. When I installed the wires, I pulled the EFI fuse to reset the ECU. The next day or so, he came back and I checked the wiring and his front ks which I thought felt a little loose when I installed the connector. He had been to the pick and pull that day and said he replaced the ks connector with one from there. I replaced his broken ks (snapped in half). and checked the connectors for tightness. All seemed well. I don't remember if I pulled the EFI fuse the second time or not. All connections are soldered btw.
