I have researched for over an hour now and still havent found the info im looking for, so I apologize in advance, if im starting a new thread when one already exists with this info. Question is, to remove the rear knock sensor is it necessary to remove the starter? I have and 89 turbo with a broken knock sensor and I tried to unplug the sensor on my other 89,to get and idea on the the size socket I need for removal, and couldnt even get the plug off cause of the location ofthe starter. It would come most of the way off but not all the way. Also if anyone knows, what size socket removes these sensors? Im also looking for a couple of spares if anyone has any. Thanks for your help

You don't have to pull the starter completely, but chances are you at least have to loosen it off. I managed to slip my plug off with the starter bolted on, but the engine was out of the car and even then it still took quite a bit of fiddling.

when i did my KS rewire, i didnt remove the starter. i just pulled off the plug from behind it. ('89 motor) it was easy enough. most people have to finagle it a bit, but mine just popped right off. :)

by the way, i'm assuming you have an 89+ motor/car?

to take the plug off you dont need to remove the starter, but to remove the KS it self i am not sure....removing the starter isnt a big deal anyway. two bolts and youre done, you dont need to disconnect anything.

thanks for the replies guys. Maybe I need to fiddle with it a bit more then. You guys would love the way the previous person wired this up. The rear knock sensor is busted so they took the broken side of the sensor itself and ran a wire from it and tapped into the other sensor wire harness with one of those inline taps. So i have like a 14 guage wire running from the broken side of the sensor stem and tapped into the wire harness of the front sensor. do you think Im having problems with codes?????? It actually works alot better then you would think. I average throwing a code couple of times a week. Ive got to get this fixed!!!! And it looks like the car might have a new starter so I assume this is how it happened in the first place,

I can get my rear knock sensor off in five minutes without touching the starter. Just use a pair of vice grips and you are set :)
