I know ive been posting a lot but you guys really help. My car makes sort of a knocking noise from 2500-2800 rpm's ONLY in neutral. however, when im driving normally, even if im accelerating at WOT, the cars as quiet as can be...Just wondering what could cause that, ive been told that i would definitely hear and notice rod knock while driving if i had it.

sounds like begining stages of rod knock. maybe just a valve clearance issue or an exhaust leak, but that is about the rpm where rod knock starts. If that is what it is, you will be able to hear it before long.

another possibility is a worn wrist pin or more likely a cylinder that is warn pretty bad and it is piston slap. if it is piston slap, you should be fine for a while sh*t, I have been driving mine with piston slap for about 7000 miles now and it is still the same. It does need to be fixed, but it should hold up fine for quite some time. not worring about mine as I am getting ready to swap out a lexus 1uz v8 with a TT setup on it, so I am not bothering with it.

the bad part is that and not trying to frighten you, but rod knocks are usually most pronounce in the 2500 to 3000 rpm range. which is where you notice it. What weight oil are you using and how is the oil pressure?

i just switched to 20w50 synthetic turbo formula...when i got it the guy said there was 10w30 in it. The thing i cant uderstand is why i cant hear it while driving, i tried....even held it at the rpm range and nothing. I dont have an exhaust either, my car is stock with the exception of BOV and intake.

try feathering the throttle in that range and see if you hear anything then. usually if it is the begining of rod knock it might not be heard very easily and feathering it will sometimes make it more pronounce. another thing is to short out each ign lead one by one and free rev the motor like you how you are doing it to be able to hear it now. If you hit a particular cylinder and the noise is not there then that is the cylinder that has the problem. If none causes any change then the problem is most likely not a rod problem.

i wouldnt feel comfortable doing that because ive never done it before. Is there any other way to find out if it is rod knock for sure?

i dont understand how to do any of that, all my mechanical work...like BHG repair etc, is done by my best friend who is an airplane mechanic. I only do intake, exhaust, intercooler.....no tearing down of any sort.

Even if this is a rod knock, chances are it's no big deal. I drove mine for nearly a year - and when I finally tore it down, the rod was slightly roasted, but it hadn't gotten any worse over the year that I drove it. Just make certain you always keep oil in it, and it should run for a long time.

Rod knock usually shows up when you are changing load on the engine, and at 2500 - 3000 rpm. You can't hear it at WOT to begine with, because the engine is louder than the knock at WOT.

Open the hood, and free rev the engine, letting it peak at about 2800 rpm. If you can hear it start to knock as the engine is peaking and starting to fall in revs, I'll bet you have a rod knock. If this is the case, don't worry about it... with one caveat - if it starts to get worse, stop driving - and I mean right away, get it towed to your buddy's place and pull the engine.

okay, well someone answer this to me...first off, i have a rapid-paced ticking sound at 2000-2500rpms, after that, its gone...well, whenever i changed my oil when i first got the car to full synthetic 10w30...it was around this time i think that i noticed the ticking sound...well on my oil pressure gauge, it is always at damned near zero. could the oil/oil pressure have something to do w/ this ticking because it does not sound like rod knock...i've heard rod knock plenty of times...

It will last for quite a bit. im tearing my bottom end out soon and im gonna do new bearings and oil rings and maybe even pistons. ALso head work with ARP gear. Ill be posting pics soon of my progress :D
