sounds like i have a rod knock in my daily driver, a 97 camry ce.

too bad, its a good car and has saved me multiple times when the supra was down.

i could have sworn that i changed the oil not too long ago but it looks pretty nasty.

shoulda went 5m...... they go FOREVER w/o oil...... ask me how I know.... :icon_razz

my ol' 84 went..... probably a week w/o me adding oil to it....(oh, it leaked REALLY bad too) still no rodknock, no tapping, nothing..... the only time it got oil was after my bro drained the oil from the 302 he rebuilt into a bucket, so I got a funnel and dumped it in. Maybe all the metal shavings filled all the scratches and what not? Anyway, I tried everything to get the motor to die so I could just order another one. I sold it, and the kid is still driving it, although he was cool enough to fix the oil leak... :biglaugh:

I have an 87 Cressida for sale (possibly...)... lol

hah "maybe all the metal shavings filled in the scratches"

yeah right. one thing with this camry though, the brake pedal had a BAD vibration, it needed new rotors...since this was the beater i just decided to go REAL hard on the brakes. rapid decceleration from like 120 to 50 all the time. and what do you know? the vibration went away. :icon_razz

97 camry, eh? well, thats your problem right there...
should've bought an 89 like my buddy had.

4cyl.. 2.2? i was no toyota expert when he had it... it just would keep going.
there wasnt a damn thing wrong with it, but he hated it. so he tried to kill it.
and it would not go. 15,000 mi oil changes, driven hard all the time.
ran great. i hate ultra reliable cars that you hate. why cant the cars you love be so reliable...?

It's all about stress on the motor.
The engine in the Camry makes like 98hp.
If you had it modded out to 175hp, it would die a quick death.

Just like if your taking a 235hp engine, and pushing it to 400hp, and it becomes "unreliable" suddenly.

Ok, so I know some 7M's have died due to rod knock, and that the 7M has/had a head gasket problem, mostly because of the low factory tourqe spec on the bolts. (52lbs is about 20lbs too low we have since found out.)

If you run your stock 7M with full oil, and 72lbs on the head bolts, they are very reliable. On stock boost that is. Heck, I'd say they are reliable at 10lbs of boost on a stock CT, stock HG and bolts to 72lbs, especially if you run 6 quarts of oil in the motor all the time. (About one quart high, but it's a good safety net oil wise, and your in no danger of having the oil whipped up by the crank at 6 quarts.)
