Well, I finally got around to getting my hands on a donor car. I got a 92 SC400 over the weekend for $1000 and I couldn't be happier.

I'll keep this post updated as I go, although it will be slow at times. I'll also give some of the reasons for the decisions I make during the swap for the people that may want to do this swap in the future.

I went with an SC400 because it has a rear sump pan & pickup, and the exhaust manifolds are a little more Supra friendly as far as space goes.

Today I get to go put the driveshaft back in it and run it around my dad's yard for a little bit to double check the shift points on the trans, as I did not have adequate space to do it yesterday. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

8/4/08 - So I got around to breaking the 1UZ down over the weekend. The entire motor was covered with 1/4 inch of sludge internally, but nothing important was damaged. The cam saddles look new, and other than alot of old oil caked on, I think she's gonna be ok w/ a rebuild. The other good thing is that after 16 years and 185,000 miles the cylinders still show a nice crosshatch (one of the pics kinda shows it). I went on and ordered an adapter plate from Phil Bradshaw (you will deal with him in one way or another if you ever want to do this swap). My logic is, it will be cake to fab mounts with just the trans mated to the bare block installed in the car.

12/15/08

Not a whole lot of progress. I made a critical error and ruined the old block, but i'm not too heartbreoken. That motor was becoming a pain in the ass due to the "cleanliness" issues that it had. I found a replacement motor last weekend that i don't have to rebuild, and got it for next to nothing. Flywheel should be here soon, and I will be test fitting my dummy engine in the next 2 weeks for mount design.

ewwww, hydro fan....

Do you have a late 89? I think the mounts are the same, if so...

also, going to swap to an auto, or going to switch to a r154? Don't think the W58 would last very long...

Can't wait to see how this turns out...

and here's a little inspiration..

keeping the Lexus trans. You have to make custom mounts due to engine placement being a tad too far forward as far as I know.

I put the driveshaft back in the donor car this evening to get it unloaded from the truck, took it for a quick test spin....man that thing has some bite to it...there is something to be said for 200 lb/ft of torque at 1000rpm :p

There is something about the 1UZ in a supra I really like. I think maybe its because the mk3 reminds me so much of my F-body camaros. Good luck with your swap.

So I started engine removal sunday, got most of the top done, just have to get under the car now.

Found out that I can ditch the hydrofan completely and use the fan bracket from the LS400 to mount a fan clutch and 10 blade turbo fan to use in the Supra.

Of note, the SC has a nifty little tray in front of the radiator for bolts and tools while working on it.

Also, for those that may be interested in doing this swap, getting the ECU out is cake. Just pull the carpet up on the passenger side floorboard (very similar to FC RX7's and Civic/Accord), take 2 10mm bolts out of the plastic cover and BAM, there it is. The bitch is, you have to take half of the dash out to get the harness completely unplugged and up through the firewall.

Small update:

I'm 3 converter bolts and a trans crossmember away from pulling the engine out of the SC. I will tell you this, getting the exhaust off that pig is a kick in the dick. The cats don't look like they will clear the floorpan/firewall, so you have to get them off. Just 3 nuts each...sounds simple eh? Not so much.

Is your 89 an early or late style subframe? (i.e. square or round mounts)

I build and sell bolt-in mount sets for the later (round mount) subframes.

How much are your mounts? Do you sell them for the pre 89 too?

A bit off topic but has anyone put a 1UZ in a MKII?

This has been done a few times....

Currently no, I dont haven't them avalible for the early subframe. I need to finish the design of them and start to produce them too... Price wise, I sell them for $150 a set plus shipping...

Cool. That seems totally reasonable. I am still finishing my interior so I will be a little while yet on buying the mounts. Perhaps by the time I am ready you will have them in production or I will have found another subframe. If it helps with design you may want to check out this guy's pics....

Please lmk if and when you get them ready. I will gladly be a test bunny.
I'm not all that great with that kind of fabrication so I would really be interested in buying motor mounts.

Yeah, those are Mike's mounts. The only problem is that they are solid mounts and bolt 100% between the engine and subframe, no rubber.....
