ok so i gotta just tell you guys the frustration ive had with the supra the last 2 years or so. i just gotta get it off my chest... it hurts! lol im not really gunna throw pics up because its to much work for showing off sometin i cant be proud of anymore... but ill throw a couple up in a couple days to show what i almost had.

so it all started about 2 years ago when i got my first 87 auto turbo. I actually got it for super cheap. I first bought a pitbike for 250 dollars. Rode that around for a bit, traded that for a yamaha XJ seca 2 that was running 10's with nos and low 12's without. :) first bike. Painted that then drove about 200 miles to pick up the 87 that i traded it for. So i basically got the supra for 250 dollars. It had 133k didnt run. I later found out when i rebuilt it that there was a hole in a piston!! The guy was running N/A injectors, so it prolly just got to lean one day when he was hitting it and melted the piston.

So i pulled that out, and rebuilt it at a college auto class by me. Just all stock just for my first supra. lol So did all the machining, new bearing, seal and what not. After about 2 months got it together and back at my buddies house where i was workin on my car. Got the motor in and left it by my buddies house for about a year b4 i started getting it together. I had no job, so couldnt really buy stuff for it, so i basically cheaped out with it. I had no other option, i was excited for my first fast car, let alone a supra! That motor got rained on and just wasnt taken care of all the time it was sitting. I got the motor started, but my tranny pump was shot. Took that out, took the tranny somewhat apart, and out a new pump in from another tranny.

Finally got that 7mgte (i rebuilt stock) and the auto tranny (i had to replace the pump on) and got it running. Drove it around for a lil bit getting it ready, then i started to hear a knocking :(. still drove it around knowing it was gunna blow, just had to experience a supra! thing was weak, had a code 52 plannig on rewiring it. I was making a U turn when i first took it on a major road, and the thing just died on me. towed it home and it sat for a while.

Then one day i was just browsing around the For Sale section and found a sweet deal! A built 89 7M.

JE pistons (stock compression/bore)
Eagle Hbeam rods
2.0 MLS headgasket
Fully balanced
new/ shimmed oil pump
XS power turbo (60 cold side/ 115 hot side)
aftermarket manifold
Greddy wastegate
R154
Rebuilt head

i got all that plus a HKS PFc Fcon, GCC, and a GM 3 bar map sensor for 1260 shipped to me garage! i jumoed on that deal!

got that a week later, took about a month to get into my 87 (convert to manual) and running. Drove it around for a while, pulled so strong at just 8 pounds. I was using 5w30 GTX in it. After a couple times driving it, the oil pump pulley took a shit. Its hard to explain but theres like a metal ring that sits behind the pulley and infront of the retainer bracket thing. that thing ground away and caused the pulley and shaft to ove in a bit letting oil spill out onto my belt.

I found a clean white package 89 targa supra for 800 bux! got him down to 400! granted it was striped, with interior but not assembled and it was clean interior. (my 87 was a POS body)

Pulled and threw the built 7m with the r154 into the clean white shell. I just got it running today! I put 0W40 European Blend castol oil because everyone says its the shit! lol drove it to my buddies about 2 hrs ago, showing him whats up in the toyota world. lol (he loves his pontiac GTP's) lol

After i hit it a couple times, i was pulling into his driveway and started to hear Rod Knock! WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! i couldnt believe it! im so pissed and hurt! i really am. After everything i went through to try and get this car going it just screws me again!

My GTP friend says just sell it, get something else that you can drive. I have said it and keep telling him. NO! i have to own and cruise in my supra! I WANT IT SO BADLY! Ive been so close way to many times... but i guess now im gunna have to wait till i can rebuild it. Im not giving up hope! I am a dedicated supra enthusiast! lol i know just about evrything i need to know about these cars, yet ive never really drivn one/had a nice DD. But mark my word i will have one someday soon! Atleast im set with all the forged stuff i wanted in my 7m. I guess i gotta look at it that way.

Well im about done talking/thikning about my supra. Im just getting to frustrated and irritated again just talking about it.... lol well idk if you guys actually read the whole thing, but i had to tell my story.

will post a couple pics soon.

Damn.... I really hope mine doesnt go to rod knock... it's been sitting about 8 months, just got it running last week (BHG 3 days after i bought it >.>) runs a bit rough and has one bloody hell of a time with cold starts (I mean car wont start till the 4th~5th time you try it, then you have to pump the gas pedal until it gets over 1500RPM and hold it there for about a minute.. then, and only then... will it stay running lol)

You just don't want the story to end do you haha

If I were you I would be looking at a complete and thorough engine rebuild at this point.

I bought it off a guy on here that had it built by someone by him... He had trouble with his harness so didnt drive it much... Then he got a raise and decided to go 1jz... It was runnin great wen i first had it goin in my 87... Its gotta be because of that pulley.. Idk hopefully it works.. I dnt wanna wait to rebuild it... If it fails again ill build it again, but for now ik hoping this will do it...

Well it was low on oil because of that pulley pushing back, which spat oil all over my belt... And idk if it was low oil pressure cause i ddnt have a guage on it before... Doesnt matter now, it needs new bearings... Wethere putting them in without rebuilding it will work... I dont know but im gunna find out i guess...

Have any of u just put bearings and put it back in?

I have put bearings in supras many times with no problems. Just check the crank journal spec to make sure there not too worn. You will need a good micrometer as the measurements are very precise with IIRC there is something like 0.0004 difference between a good and a bad journal.

What the knock is is there is a gap between the rod bearing and the crank journal. Oil under pressure fills this gap and keeps the two from touching. When you have low oil pressure (low oil causes low pressure) the bearing on the rod hits the crank journal. That causes a dent in the bearing which will allow the oil to leak from the area and cause a larger gap the oil cant fill and will leak around the bearing. That makes it so the bearing and journal will keep hitting as the oil can keep them apart. Unplug one wire at a time from the coil with the car off. Start the car if the knock goes away with one of the wires off that is the cyl that has the rod knock. If the knock does not go away or does not at least get quieter then it may be something else.

The main force of the knock is during the compression stroke when the spark plug fires and the combustion starts. The force of the explosion pushes on the piston and hence the rod pushing the bearing into the journal. The upper bearing half the one on the rod itself not the rod cap will take the brunt of the force, this means it wears out faster, but it will start to come apart putting particles of it through the lower half of the cap and tearing it up and possibly the crank too. You can do bearings in the car if you drop the sub frame out of the car, but its probably faster to just pull the engine and trans together out.

Good luck with it.

They are good but they only sell one type anymore just the alumaguard. Either they dont make or dont sell duraglides anymore for the supra. Them seem like an nice enough bearing only used them twice. One is still on a friends car with over 5000 miles on them and he beats the car pretty hard running just under fuel cut, with a lex afm and no 550s and no fuel controllers of any kind. So far they have held up fine. I put a set in my wifes supra too, it only has 200 miles on the bearings and we will have to see how it goes. Its the 3rd set of bearings in her car.

Mostly I always just used the toyota bearings, I would get the correct sizes of bearings for each rod, ie they have 6 bearing sizes from toyota numbed 0-5 if you add the number on the rod to the number on the crank you get the number for the bearing you should use. But talking to toyota techs they always just throw #3 bearings in and and say its close enough for any situation. I think there is 0.0002 difference from one bearing size to the next in the 0-5 system. Doing it this way you have to take it all apart get the numbers order them wait for a week to get them then you can reinstall. And most of the dealers dont know what you are talking about they only find the "standard" and "oversized" bearing sets in the computer you have to find someone who knows what they are doing to get the 0-5 ones. Just make sure to get some good assembly lube for it and prime the oil pump and system before starting the car. Ie fill the oil pump before installing it back in engine and crank car over with injectors unplugged to get oil pressure up. Also check and clean the pan usually the bearing material settles at the bottom of the pan.

Ok i think ima go with acl... Just cause i hear they r good, and i can get them nxt day... Ill be sure to measure the journals before!

And im plannin on doin the mains to... Cause i might as well if im doin the rods... Wat do u guys think?

And from wat most ppl say on here, the 0w30 euro blend is their favorite... So i just chose it based off that... Lol
