what's up. i just bought a 87 supra with 198,000 miles for $1,900. What can I do to make the engine last a long time. I plan on swapping out the motor eventually, but I don't have that kind of money right now, so getting this stock engine to run and last for a long time would be the best thing to do.

What kind of maintenance or replacing part should I do? Any help on figuring this out would be greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Ij said a mouthfull ! If it were i...., I would get a keg and a few of my gear head buddies and a digital camera, and start ripping the thing apart and put it back together proper. Man with those miles on it. You have to replace the head gasket, the valve cover gaskets and a complete tune up. Be carefull with all of the rubber air intake pieces, they are fragile and expensive. That's just skimming the top half of the engine. There is still the belly of the beast. The first thing I would do is get a trsm toyota supra repair manual. It is now going to be your closest friend. I hope the ride is in good shape, maybe you have gotten lucky. But luck and supra don't often cross paths unless you are talking about a speeding ticket you didn't get. You did however come to the right place because everyone here is always willing to help. Start with the small things and then go deeper.

Welcome to our obsession! First thing you need to do is everything you would do for routine maintence (oil, coolant, plugs etc). Also change the thermostat and check all the belts and hoses. Beyond that, you should also do a compression check and test the coolant for exhaust gasses with a test kit. If everything is good, have fun.

^^ yea, you might wanna rebuild that engine, unless it already has been, 198k miles is alot for a none rebuilt, but maintain the engine and car properly and any car will last almost forever.

Hey guys. I thought I overpaid also. The car is in good shape, the only problem is that it has rust under the hood on the side frame of the car. How do I get rid of that? The car was a single owner and I'm the second owner. He was an old dude who let his wife drove the car and they never drove it in the winter because they have other cars.

I figure I might be lucky on that part. I don't know. More help??

Thanks.

you have to either sand through the rust, or cut it out. It was 1 owner and his wife drove it and you think that makes you lucky??????? How many times has your mom climbed under the hood of her car?

Post up some pics...this thing could be very nice if it was never drove in the winter.

Does the car run now? If so how does it feel. If all the maintance was kept on it then you could good for many more miles.

Maintenance is the kicker with a supra. Any skimping anywhere over the course of those 198k miles is going to be a headache for you, supras aren't as forgiving as hondas. That said, if proper maintenance was performed, you're probably good for a while as long as you're not abusive to the car.

Expensive? Yes. But you'll find it will become an addiction, so let me leave you with the question... What addiction isn't expensive? Welcome to the forum have fun!
