So last year I sold my black 87 7m car; which I was very happy with, except it wasn't targa, and I miss having a targa. My other reason for selling was that I had picked up a bit of supra history:

The car used to belong to Genna. When I picked it up, it had fallen far from what it used to be when it made #2 on 7mpower. It had become home to a few local animals, was stripped down, and hadn't run in what looked to be a while.

Since I was faced with a completely empty engine bay, I decided that after having 4 7m's I was going to try something different. I decided to drop in a 1jz.

After looking around I decided to go with JDMExchange in Philly, PA. They turned out to be great guys and more than helpful. Since I wasn't interested in paying the money for shipping a clip, and they offered to pull whatever I wanted free of charge; I drove my POS toyota pickup down there to get all the parts.

My 1jz truck:biglaugh:

Amazingly, they were able to shove the 1jz and parts into it. Equally amazingly, the truck made it to philly and back without a problem.

The supra was then pushed into an old barn and the 1jz swap began. There wasn't a lot of space:

The old barn was pretty exciting to work in, the hoist managed to go through the floor while moving the engine around. Fortunately, no damage was done except to the floor.

I used a 2.5" holesaw to cut a hole through the firewall directly below the speedo hole. I've heard of people using 2" saws, but that seemed too small. The wiring boot fit perfectly into the 2.5" hole. Pulling the harness through was tricky, I can't imagine trying it with a 2" hole.

The first time I put the engine in I didn't run the harness through the firewall first. Using this method, you pretty much have to though, there really isn't enough space to push the harness through with the engine in the bay.

Also, I didn't get the dash harness from JDMExchange before they sold it. However, I did get the entire engine bay harness. Using just the efi and engine bay harnesses, it is possible to make all of the plugs needed to make a plug and play swap(for an 89+ car). At the Junction Block side of the engine bay harness, there are two plugs which you can pull and dremel a bit to make plugs which will work with the M1 and B3 connectors, which aren't already on the 1j harness. I cut the plugs off the engine bay harness with about 16" of wire so I only had to make one joint to use them. I cut, repinned, and extended the two plugs on the 1jz efi harness which match the ma70 body plugs.

I need to get some more pics and add to this at some point. As of right now though, the 1jz swap is up and running, thanks to the help of friends and the knowledge of the forums.

Wow great build. That car is one of my favorites, its even on my myspace. I heard about JDMExchange..where exactly is it? You seem like you have the skills to bring this Supra back from the dead and maybe even better than ever. Keep it up!

you killed it with the 1j

I sort of expected to take some flak for putting a 1j in this car, so i'm going to say this now:

I don't care. I've put together and run 4 7m's of my own and they are great motors, I just wanted to try something different for once. To my knowledge no one in CT is running a 1j at the moment.

I love the supra, and both the 7m and 1j are supra motors, so don't be a hater.

yep, thats it.
jon, i give you a lot of respect for getting that swap done in sub 30* weather in less than a month, and i feel proud to know someone who has been around in the supra game for this long.

let the haters hate, do it for yourself and noone else

keep up the good work man, see you over the summer at work. BTW, me and boostin might need your garage and engine hoist for a little bit. then it would be time to see what a BPU 1j vs a BPU 7m is like.
