Usually marks go Up Dave!

The rings are designed that way so that the gases and pressures of the combustion actually go behind the ring and push it out against the cylinder wall creating a "seal" between the piston and the wall. This causes a more efficient power stroke of the engine.

Chriso: Yep and I'm old enough to remember "Gas Ported Pistons" that had tiny holes drilled down through the crown to behind the ring to achieve the same result :)

(I may even have my old Jig for drilling them here somewhere in the shed)
