Well last nite I fired up my engine after 6 weeks of evenings and weekends working on a BHG. I pulled the head with the engine in the car since it only has 90k on it (88 Turbo Targa - maroon, purchased new). The original hone marks were still in the cylinders and bore-gauge showed NO taper or wear - no ridge at the top of the cylinders. I found that a slow leak had caused rusting at the fire ring of the HG, and grooving of the head.
I lapped the head, and the block using the procedure recommended on here, but couldn't get the block smooth.
SO, I ended up pulling the engine anyway, and had it spray-cleaned, decked 0.005" and lite hone to put a new finish on the cylinders at Rob's in Hayward. Deburred _everything_ (block, crank, head, bottom of cylinders, every machined surface...).
Went back together w/ Cometic HG stock thickness, all new Clevite bearings and PC rings. Bearings all plastiguaged within TRSM range & rings gapped within range. The original bearings looked new.... :(
The only real mistake I made was connecting the cluster of wires to the starter instead of the ground....found the cure for the resultant electrical weirdness in the TIPS thread. (key-off check engine lite & relay buzzing!!)
Found the SEARCH feature to be invaluable - cudos to everyone who contributed!!
I have HKS 65mm exhaust w/ stock cat & DP currently, HKS PFC CON, FCD, & boost control, TRD struts & Eibach lowering springs,
I have a megan DP & will go to 3" hiflow cat & muffler, LEX AFM 550's & AFPR after a bit of break-in.
Can't wait to get out & seat those rings!

Congrats! If i were you i would have used toyota select fit bearings, but as long as you properly machined everything for the clevites thats good too. Now you have a fully rebuilt motor!

Just curious, how much did each of the machining procedures cost?

I lapped the head myself in hopes of NOT pulling the engine. The lapping block was $160 and the diamond paste was around $50 for 4 different grades.
The machining at Rob's was quite reasonable: $350 total and $199 of that was the rings, bearings and complete gasket & seals set.
Ya, I'm hoping that this engine will go closer to 200k on Mobil I
