It was a BHG, it was a DIY! - Thx to all.

Just wanted to post an update: About 4 weeks ago I asked the group if a couple of noob's could tack a BHG, and four weeks later I'm happy to say it's a definite 'YES'! Looks like the previous owner drove a while on a weeping gasket more than a full blown gasket. After a few stupid and sometimes funny moments, including a complete cluster over the CPS, the old engine fired up yesterday and we tuned in the idle speed and got the timing set. A "real" mechanic was there with a lot of compliments over an engine that sounded perfect and a clean engine bay. This was WAY too satisfying, and could definitely get addicting. Now to chase down the water leak that sprung after a longer drive yesterday - hopefully a hose clamp I forgot to tighten down. Anyway, thanks everybody for some solid advice and needed encouragement before I started.

Congrats! Hopefully it will hold for much longer. (Get that water leak fixed!)

BTW, what exactly did you do? resurface? OEM or MHG? ARPs or stockers?

No worries over the water leak. It didn't show up until I had shut it off for a few minutes, and then we pushed it into my friend's driveway. I'm on my way over there now to find the source and fix it before I start it again. I went with a stock HG and ARP bolts torqued to 77 ft-lbs (2 over ARP recommendations). I just couldn't get myself to pull the block, so I had the head cleaned and surfaced, and made sure the valves were clean and seating properly. New gaskets and hoses throughout. We followed the Bible - aka TSRM - to the letter and followed torque specs all the way through. I won't mod much - maybe another 30 hp - and I try not to abuse it, so I expect (read HOPE!) not to have to do this job again.

Glad to see you got her back together. I remember u asked me about a machinist, I take it you found one.How was pricing to get it down, cause were both local.

I spent $200 total for the head work at Eastview Auto Parts on Bardstown Road. A little more than I had wanted to spend, but they did some valve work (cleaning, installed valve stem seals, etc), did whatever they do to make sure there weren't any cracks, and cleaned it up to almost a shine. They also turned it around in one day, and came with a solid recommendation from St Matthew's Imports. Hopefully $200 was about right.

Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of hard work but defiinitely fun, and I've been busy since then with some minor mods and taking care of a slowly shrinking list of nagging problems: Interior's looking good again, new 17" rims, ds carrier bearing, new air intake and full exhaust, still working on getting my KS rewire right, and a few others.

Next winter I'm going to tackle something else for the first time: Body and prep work for new paint! No way I'm going to try and spray it, though. There will be a new thread or two on the how-to's and suggestions for picking the right paint, but I'll save that for when I get started.

I've decided that this is my learning car, and I hope it's around for a good long time. I'm laying down some plans to do a complete teardown and rebuild on something (MKIV maybe?) in about 9 years when my boy gets old enough to start working with me. I'm hoping we can finish a build together about the time he's getting ready to drive. Maybe something he can take to prom or something, but it will be my car. I think it'll be a great way to spend quality time together when he gets old enough. Hope he thinks so...

LOL. I've been busy, but that's more than I will ever cover in a month, much less a weekend. I pretty much keep to a snail's pace, but it's because I try to do it right the first time. Doesn't always work out that way, lol.

Thanks for your offer for help. I'd still like to have that beer, so if this Thursday still looks good lets figure a time/place. Just send me a PM and I can be anywhere after 5 for an hour or two.
