So my friend and I were discussing supras and such, hes a supra nut, the one I bought mine from. He mentioned that in Japan they continued making the MKIVs until 2003, is that true?! I didnt know if it was false info or not I thought all were discontinued.

He also said MKIIIs were made up into early 1993, which means theres a few out there, like 1500 or somethign he said...

whats up?

02 and 93 are correct.

Although, I recall reading in another thread on another forum that the system they use to give a year designation to a car in Japan is diffferent. It said something along the lines of a 93 would mean it was sold in 93 but could be what we call a 92 here. A few months ago(in 06 still) new cars here were labled 07 modeled even though it wasn't 07 yet, obviously, and some left over 06s are still on the lots in current 07. So that's what I mean when I said a 93 Japanese A70 could still be the same build date as the last 92 US ones but it's just leftover from the end of the A70s until they switched to the A80 in the same year.

I shouldn't be quoted with this as it was a thread from a while ago.

If one of our members in Japan, or anyone that would know for sure, that frequent here could give some kind of yes or no, that would be cool. :)

And there was a rare green color offered on the MKIII's in Japan only that nobody is listing anywhere.

Well obviously it wouldn't be listed in any American color list for the Supra. They got a couple colors we didn't and we have a couple they don't.

I've searched the international forums (this and SF and no luck yet). Oh well.

I have it listed in my Japanese brochure for the Supra...

It's somewhere on the internet, I'm sure.

A couple of our members have the color on their Supra so it's not like we don't know what it is.

I don't know, but if Japan is the same as the US, you can buy a car "early". My parents bought a 1996 Saturn in July 1995. Maybe the Japanese do it a little differently, and produce the cars one year and will sell it until a little ways into the year, to a cutoff [ie: don't sell these that were made in 1992 any later than mid 1993, when the next model is released].

Who knows?

Rumor I heard was that the MkIV was to be released in 1993, but was bumped back for some reason [improvements, maybe?] and released mid '93 [hence 93.5].

Yes, you will see the termed expression, "93.5 MKIV's" strictly because of the reason that in Japan, by paper, there were technically 1993 JZA70's...not many, but they existed for sure.

The MKIV ceased production in 2002. The last years (maybe even THE last year) was when they introduced the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing Intelligence) to the 2JZ...which failed miserably. :icon_conf
So a lot of the 99-02 MKIV's were ignored and backhanded because of the experimental changes they made to it in its later years.

I'm not sure if they actually called it VVT-i as Toyota refers to it as today...but it WAS indeed a variable valve timing system.

The JZS161 Aristo is a big source of 2JZ-GTE engines with VVTi [blue-tops], and on the top it says "3000 VVT-i TwoWay Twin Turbo".

This is factually incorrect. 1998 USDM N/A MKIV Supra's had the 2JZ-GE with VVT-i.

I've seen quite a few NA->T VVT-i cars. In general VVT-i cars tend to make a little bit more power. Lots of people mod them and I've never seen anyone "ignore and backhand" a MKIV because it had VVT-i. They are a little different to work with, you just have to be aware of the differences.

People mod them a lot. I've even seen one supercharged:

As for tuning, there are people who are working specifically with the VVT-i cars. Power Enterprises is one example. The sell a device they call the CAMCON (Controls Valve opening Timing and Fuel Mixture ) which allows quite bit of flexibility for controlling how VVT-i kicks in.

Calling VVT-i a "failure" not exactly accurate either. VVT-i is also found in Toyota's current V6 engine, the 3.5L 2GR-FE V6. This comes in the Avalon, RAV4, and Camry here in the US, the Aurion in Australia, and various models in Japan. The only difference is that in the newer models, it varies both the intake and the exhaust cam, so they call it dual VVT-i. It is the same basic system that was standard in the 1998 MKIV's.
