what are the advantages or disadvantages to the swap. I know the gears are diff but are they stronger built and if i am going to do a gte swap on my ge would it be worth it since I have it out already?

And the w58 is much smoother and easier/nicer to use not to mention lighter too....that being said with all the jz swapping in EVERYTHING costs of a r154 are going up up up and quality used ones ar few and far between making w58s seem the better choice (they are everywhere and cheap!) If you dont mind breaking one every year or so they can handle decent power...

i am hopping for 400-600 just some where about there. i know its a wide range but i am going to rebuild a gte then throw it in so it sounds like it would just be the better choice since i have to replace the clutch in the process.

Its been done with a w58, if I remember correctly it needed a pretty beefy clutch though, it held it though.. like I said for about a year of DD then it broke, but for free to a couple hundred $$ you could have another one. Most r154s now sell for around 500-1000 and that is of unknown condition. I've got 4 (other projects) ive pulled from local yards @90 a pop. Not trying to convince you either way just wanna let you know.

400 is pretty easy to get. however if you want to pas 550...you better have a deep pockets.

Either way...you had defiantly better get an R154

I guess I should add to this thread since Ive seen way too many threads talking about the W58 not holding anything beyond 300 hp. My current setup puts down just over 500 whp and has had over 400 whp for the past two years, and its still on a W58 with almost 130k miles.

Im not saying that its not a good idea to use the R154 because I just bought one and Im in the process of saving the money to build it, but Ive got to speculate that the majority of the people saying that the W58 wont hold are owners that havent pushed that power yet or never tried.

I know the W58 isnt as strong as the R154 and I remember when Dr Jonez demolished his W58, but IMO, if you dont have any firsthand experience, then I think you should say so before giving your opinion.

Just my 2 cents,
Brandon

Only evidence I need is the simple fact that Toyota didn't feel the W58 was up to the task to hold the extra torque of the 7M-GTE.

Comes down to Tq, hp means nothing to the trans, 58's are used behind 600+rwhp Rotaries here all the time.

My rebuilt W58 showed signs of stress under 300 due to the GT3040R with a .63 AR Turbine housing as it would make boost just off idle and made massive Tq before choking at 5000ish.

but they also thought the stock torque of the headbolts was enough to hold down the massive power of the 7M and look what happened there...................

And it was for the gasket used at that time, someone forgot to change the spec when the gasket got updated to a different material.
(LOL@ Massive Power....:nono: )
