Is the factory differential a long lasting unit?

Mine went 205,000 miles, but probably needed fixing before that. It was quiet the whole time; the way I knew was the LSD part didn't seem to work any more, and when I drained the oil it was full of gold dust. Another one I got from the salvage yard had, IIRC, 100,000 miles on it and is doing great now. I ran Redline oil in the original one for probably 140,000 of those miles. I may have paid $40 or $50 for the salvaged one, but I had to go and get it. I gave away the old one... (This is the 4.3 LSD in an '88 NA; one on a turbo Supra won't last as long.)

If yours is whining, put good oil in it and try again. If it still whines, it's gone. Checking out your oil is the best way to determine the current state. They're easy to swap.

My diff has 180k miles on it and it still works fine. I just changed the oil to redline oil and it stopped the chattering.I think the old oil was what has been in there from the Factory.... My drain plug magnet had a HUGE buildup of shit..Hopefully it'll last a little while longer tho.

hummm i am at the point i know my diff is on it's way out you kinda will know try to do donut in the rain if it hass issues most of the time lsd dead clutchs are toast from some kid that owned your car befor you and did burn out on have lawn half street = death

if you use your car hard/drifting heavy corning runing around with the spare when you are runing around on 275 on the back or last heavy down shifting and engine brakeing wheil cornring

alot of people just add way to much slip modfier witch makes you lsd smooth but has granny like reflex's when fucking around

all so but npot lest when runing red line oil you don't have to hardly no slip modfier in it since it is all ready in the oil soi little is needed

but for me i just going to kazz unit and call it a day instead of maken agrive oem diff cuase oem diff just don't last long in there top shaper were out to dame fast

I'm probably going to rebuild my 4.30 when it goes out...

1JZ + R154 + 4.30 LSD = :burnout:
Ive been runnin that setup for 5 years and I love it, just not the 3k rpm's at 70mph in 5th.:aigo: I did my swap at 214k miles and im now at 227k and I think my rears about had it. My wheels take turns spinnin, left, right, left, right, so figure its about that time.

Just to throw another variable on this fire.

I too had a noise coming from my diff.

I changed my fluid - old fluid was still practically brand new looking but was several thousand miles old.

Noise did not go away.

I drove further an d the noise continued to get louder.

Eventually it became a nice metal on metal grinding noise so I got a new pumpkin.

When I drained the fluid out of the original diff it still looked brand new. When I got the original pumpkin out of the car you could spin the input and hear the metal grinding from the input bearing.

Enjoy.
