Since I found this 1988 all-track for 1500 dollars but it needs a new clutch and some electrical work....

I'm not too familiar with the drivetrain...or replacing clutches. but i'm guessing its more difficult than it would be in a RWD front-engine car... I did my BHG by myself and i've clocked about 2k on it so I think I could do a clutch just fine but... i dont know. Thoughts?

I don't know how the car looks or the miles on it, but so far does this sound like something I should pursue? I might call the guy tomorrow.

Do they get good mpg? Some searching got me 19 mpg city 25 highway.. but i don't know about that. sounds iffy for a 4-cyl

Are the all-trac transmissions and drivetrains strong? I wouldn't be able to find out the tranny condition until I do clutch work. :icon_mad:

I think the all wheel drive system is drawing me too it...cause I don't think they look that great.:dunno: I wasn't going to ask, but $1500 seems like a deal...he might even take less if I show him $1000 cash....and it sounds like a fun car to throw around and DD.

You have to pull the motor, maybe drop the trans too. I can't remember for sure on the trans, motor definitely has to come out. Do a search on www.alltrac.net, there is a detailed write up for it. It's an AWD turbo car, that has MUCH more to do with gas mileage than the fact that it's a four cylinder. That mileage doesn't sound too far off. Check for rust in the usual Supra places, they have many of the same problem areas. Motor is a 3SGTE... It's beast. Trans I'm not too sure about, I know there are a few guys over 300hp on the site and I'm pretty sure they're still on their stock transmission. Again, a quick search on alltrac.net should yield the answers you're looking for.

it is a monumental mother of all pains in the ass.
I owned a 165. doing an engine swap in that car threw me into a depression I couldnt get out of for two years.

No kidding, a friend of ours had one and not once was there a time where everything was fine.

As for the clutch job, you don't have to pull the engine.

hard, not really. Its a lot of work though. You can squeeze the trans out with the engine still in place but its easier to just pull everything (engine and all) and do it. I'm not looking forward to doing mine thats for sure, lol.

As for gas mileage in my 185 i get ~ 20-23 in the city (depening how much i beat on it) and 23-26 on the highway (depening how fast I go, they have short gears so slower the better gas mileage).

yipes. well i might inquire tomorrow but it sounds more trouble than its worth to me right now. Cyroslash - so are you saying these cars are generally problematic?

thanks people :)
