is my tranny toast

well i have a strange problem. with the rear wheels in the rear; i'm not able to rotate them. almost like there locked in place and the car is in neterual. (sp)

when i push the clutch in, it's the same deal. also i'm having a hard time putting it in first.

i removed the DS and i was able to spin the back tires. i know my diff is fine..

Could you turn the DS in the Trans when it was unbolted?

hmm i didn't try that. but check this out.. today i was park on a pretty good incline. i push the clutch in and the car did not roll back...

any other things i need to check

Try turning the input flange on the Diff.

Check the parking brake

parking brake is check.. like i said when i remove the DS the wheels will spin freely

And that's why I asked if you can turn the INPUT FLANGE

Do the wheels both turn the same way when you spin one?

it's an LSD.. did some turbo models come with out it

Nope as far as I know all T's had LSD.

If the wheels are turning opposite the LSD is stuffed, try turning the flange and let me know what it does (backwards and forwards)

It's a bit hard to diagnose over the net so sorry for all the questions.
(this sort of thing usually takes a minute or so if you can get hands on)

I think that was standard for turbo models, Mike. Can you shift it into other gears with it just sitting? Something happen to the clutch fork?

as far as i know the LSD is original.. what do you want me to do???step by step.. what do you want me to check. i don't know why the LSD would have anything to do with my tranny moving while in neterual

K just try turning the Diff Input flange by hand without the DS in place, Wheels off the ground E Brake off.

I've had a badly damaged Diff in the past that would only turn forwards but would lock up when you tried to turn it backwards.

This is just a hunch and if I'm correct it's cheaper than a Trans!

Just doing the process of elmination thing.

so both wheels need to move in the same direction??? i thought with an LSD the tires would move opposite

Open or Torsen turn opposite

LSD should turn the same direction as the Clutch packs "limit" the slip from wheel to wheel.

When the Clutch packs are gone it will go open.

Hmmm....I have an LSD and could swear they turn opposite when in the air. Might be my other car though. So when the packs are gone the diff will go open and there won't be any other symptoms?

JJ: Yep only other symptom will be lighting 1 tire under acceleration.
