Is it my clutch?

Hi. I'm still kind of new here and so is my experience with cars. So here's my problem:

Sometimes, when there's heavy traffic and I'm slowly trotting along, or when I'm stopped, the car won't shift into first gear! It makes this rattling, chattering noise and I have to press down the clutch again and re-try shifting into first again one or two times before the clutch, I guess, "grabs" on, and the car starts moving again. I've only had the Supra for about a month and only driven it for about 2 weeks, but I don't think it's my adjustment to this particular generation Supra. I drive my dad's two 4Runners and they're way different too, but no problem shifting.

So any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Here's some info on the car:

'87 Supra N/A, about 169,XXX miles, everything stock [for now].

More than likely its the synchro. Try changing the gear oil in your trans with some Redline MT-90 or go to any GM dealer and get some Synchromesh. I have synchromesh in mine and it still grabs a little bit, but I have the turbo transmission and they tend to be notchier than the NA's transmission.

drain plug on the bottom and full on the driver side near the top. ya need a offset wrench to do it well. some have just taken out the shifter and poured it through there.

yea you can change the gear oil to see if that helps. mine was always stiff going from 1st to 2nd. 2nd gear is really stiff. it wasnt as bad before until i put in a short shifter. the shifter part wasnt the right size, so i had to modify it, and in doing that, made my shifts from 1st to 2nd a bitch. haha.

I would have suggested checking/bleeding your clutch slave/master cyl.

My 82 did that for the longest time, and my MC was leaking through the firewall into the cabin, so just kinda reach up in that area and feel for some wet. I guess you would notice a difference in pedal feel if it was it, but hey, it's a free check and will take you less than 5 mins. So it can't hurt.
