Ive been on a HD binge, its ok to burn regular dvd's to dvd5's, but hd definelty degrades on this size disk, so i believe its time to upgrade to some new media.

For anybody using these disk, how is reliability. How many disc have u burned before you have a bad disk that error's out.

Another issue i have is price. The norm seems about $2 a disc compared to about $.50 to $.80 per disc. Where did you get your media at and how much did it cost you. Right now ive priced 25 disc for $59.99 locally at circuit city.

Yup use them alot.
Haven't ran in to alot of bad DL media.
60$ for 25 you are overpaying.
I usually get it from staples on sale.

hmmm, never thought about that. Honestly i didnt think they would put them on sale.

What speeds disc do you buy, if you even care to pick a speed?Whats the actual disc space usage size. Like the dvd5's say 4.7 gigs but you can only uses 4.5gigs

Yeah they are on sale sometimes. Or clearance.
I try to burn media at 2X so I could care less about speed, I am for best quality burns I can get.
Capacity is 8.5GB and it is possible to use all of it if you know how.

HD doesn't 'degrade' on a disc.

I use Verbatim DL's and they're 100% fine. They're more scratch resistant than most, and the disc has a quality feel to it.

The only tradeoff is the 2.4x burn speed, but if you're burning large clumps of data i wouldnt want to burn faster than 4x anyway.

if HD doesnt degrade i was very disapointed in the way the 720p looked on the tv. When i get some dual layer disc ill try a 1080p copy of the same movies so i can judge for myself. Would the dvd player itself be a limiting factor?

The bitrate doesnt just change when you put it on a disc, the copy on the disc, is the same as the copy on your hard drive.

If your TV is 1080p and the copy is 720p, you're upscaling, so it might look a bit pants.

Uhm, you cant burn Hd movies on a dual layer and play it on a standard dvd player and expect 1080p...? Or, am I missing something here. The standard dvd player will play just that, Standard def.

This man is correct...unless of course, Fuzz is taking the HD source and re-encoding them for DVD - in which case the point of quality is entirely obvious :)

doh:nono:

Ok then so its the dvd player itself. The dvd player is hooked up via rca jacks. Ill switch them over to component jacks and that should be the difference :)and yes kai i am re-encoding them to play specifically on the dvd player. This "720p" dvd-r disk is still far superior to a standard dvd
