here is the deal,

my laptop has been acting up for the last 6 months. randomly shutting down on its own, and not booting on occasion. the other day it quit booting all together. i let a friend look at it and he is convinced it is the motherboard. i can get one online for around 180$. the computer is a tx1308nr and currently runs vista.
a comparable tablet(and yes i need the tablet feature as i am a artist) will run me about 1000$

so the question is is windows 7 worth the extra cash. i dont game and have bought a lot of accessories for this computer that are specific to its frame(protective covers, docking station ...ect)

Considering Vista is a steaming pile... Yeah, Windows 7 beats it. Make sure you can get the proper drivers for it though, if so, go for it. Plus, if you use it for work it's a tax write off...

Get windows 7...99% of the time all the drivers will be found by the OS. Best Windows OS I've ever used, been with it since beta...

If the cost of repairs and upgrades (Windows 7 is a critical upgrade) is less than the cost of a replacement tablet PC and the current tablet PC with its repairs and upgrades will meet your needs then it's a no brainer to keep your current PC.

are you getting any blue screens prior to shutting down or does it just shut down? i think its worth saving because repair costs are way under a new unit. i do suggest you get: 1) a pre windows diagnostics program that would tell you if your mobo is infact bad. 2) install the windows 7 first and see how it runs so you wont potentially waste $180 (windows 7 installs in notime anyway)

no blue screen, it just shuts down, first a freeze up, a second later you hear the hd and processor shut down followed by all the lights. now it lights up and the fan cycles and then quits. no boot, no screen.

im not gonna waste the money on a copy of 7 just to figure out whether the board is bad. the replacement would come with 7.
it acts just like if you hold the power switch down while running.

Sounds like a heat issue.
