Insteresting starting problem...

I just replaced the crank, piston rings, bearings, head gasket, and spark plugs in my 7mge. I'm having trouble getting it started. It turns over.

I have done all of the following:

Put it in time according to the TSRM.
Checked compression in 1 and 2. 160psi Good
Checked spark on all plugs. Good
Spark plugs smell like fuel as well as the cold start injector.

It will not start at all, unless...
Here's the weird thing.
If I remove the EFI fuse (killing the injectors and spark). Then try and start it for 6 seconds. Then put the fuse back in it sound like it begins to start (Ignition) and then dies out.

My buddy thinks it might be the battery because when i try to start the battery voltage drops to just under 11volts which he say may or may not cause the injectors to operate properly.

if it was battery, you would not be cranking it for 6 seconds. mine did this similar thing, and i had a ground problem to the coils. check the connections to the cps also. and your sure the cams are timed?

I have a distributor, but yes i checked it and set it up according to the TSRM.
If i had a ground problem to the coils wouldn't I not get spark and wouldn't i get no ignition at all?

Sounds like you might be flooding (i know fuel injected, but if the pressure is wrong, it could happen).. pulling the efi fuse and cranking will burn up the extra fuel in there.. then when it starts it's because it's clean.. check your fuel pressure maybe.. COULD be something that stupid.

Like too much pressure? Or too little?

Also, by taking the EFI fuse out i will not get spark, so how would the extra fuel burn up? It may be pushed out by the exhaust, but not burned up.

Do you think it's a clogged/pinched that is causing this?

the Resistance on my Injectors was about 44ohms @ 70 degrees F (TSRM says they should be at 38ohms.) Could this be a major problem?

Be VERY careful when posting in a Tech Section that you're posting correct information.


To OP:

Ensure that all of your timing marks are lined up correctly. Then remove the #1 Spark Plug and put in a wooden dowel or something similar.

Then (by hand) rotate the engine back and forth slightly. Stop when your dowel is at it's highest point.

Then re-check all of your timing marks.

Post your findings.

Make sure your AFM is plugged in also.

When you put your timing belt on, did you turn the motor over a couple of revolutions by hand and re-check your timing marks, cams, crank, rotor pointing at #1 wire, and the #1 piston at TDC?

Sorry about the wrong info... My bad... you're right...

IDK why I put an o-ring on my distributor but I took it off and it fixed everything...
The TSRM even says the replace the o-ring. So i replaced it with one from toyota... Oh well... Runs great now!!!
